11766849 No.11766849 [Reply] [Original]

Four years ago on this day, /lit/ published and printed its first book. Today, almost 400 copies have been printed. It is perhaps the first book of its kind, the first completely anonymous collaborative book created and published online. The publishing of this book could be said to be the most significant day in history of the board.

This book is the result of a collaboration on a Google Docs document used by an unknown number of people. Perhaps as many as a hundred or more. /lit/ somehow managed to produce a funny, unique book that also provides a snapshot of the board culture of the time. Sequels (Tundra 2&3) and imitators (Hypersphere, etc.) have followed, but none retained the lure of the original.

Have you read this book?

I actually own a copy. I think that in like twenty years when I'm much older and this place is hopefully long gone, it's something I can pick up and laugh at, if at nothing else than just at the memories it'll bring back of this board. I read about a third of it and it was funny most of the time. Some parts were genuinely pretty well-written, in a grotesque sort of way. The most interesting part is how completely impenetrable it is - if you showed this book to literally anyone who ever lived that didn't frequent this board consistently for a couple years, almost none of it will make any sense, and the parts they vaguely grasp won't be understood the way they were meant to be. It's a completely unique piece of insider art, I'm not sure if anything else quite like it exists.
On the second page there's a standalone line that says "They work for the masketta man." That's nonsense completely detached from its origin, and if a copy of this book exists in a hundred years, there will be no living person who can explain why it's funny or even what it means. I find that neat and think it was worth buying a copy just for that novelty.

i sometimes dont come for a few months because i am distracted by other stuff in life but i like the knowledge that it is still there, and each and every day there will be cascades of posts about all this stuff

I was once driving to a dinner in the evening, i hadnt been on here in a couple months, and completely unbidden the thought of londonfrog popped into my head because i saw some hot girls walking on the sidewalk and i genuinely started laughing because there was a high probabiltiy that londonfrog had actually posted that very day about seeing stacies outside and feeling 'demoralized'. Idk why this was so funny to me but i guess it's because i compartmentalize 4chan into a different world and it intruded into my world really strongly and unexpectedly

if the site shut down i would feel genuinely weird, like some part of me was now gone, or rather had nowhere to express itself

See if you can spot the epic meme. The movie is genuinely good though. Its very reminiscent of the first Pusher. Robert Pattinson is excellent.
