This reminds me of a good bit from an essay whose name and author I can't remember now. The author talked about how, to a reader familiar with the current kind of realist (speaking generally) novel, the old epic style of the Iliad, the Eddas, the Morte d'Arthur, or the Silmarillion seems boring. But to the old pagan or romantic Christian, the modern novel is unbelievably dull.
