11620342 No.11620342 [Reply] [Original]

I've been reading Buddhist suttas for the past 6 months and it has really made me feel dissatisfied with my life. I am thinking of leaving my gf of 4 years to pursue disenchantment. I feel like I am on the verge of finding the truth that Western philosophy and literature couldn't provide even after years of study.

You don’t need to leave your life to be enlightened right now.

I think it's a marvelous idea darling.

this is what nietzsche meant when he said nihilistic religions were shit. there's no reason to leave your gf. leave the asceticism to the betas who can't get any.

t. lukewarm bourgeois zennist

Mahayana is basically the protestantism of the east, you can just be a normie and not do anything and reach salvation while being a good boy for the establishment, very convenient, back to work

>being a good boy for the establishment
that's literally the whole point of religion

Buddhism is about meditating in jungle groves and making normies give you free rice.

I would suggest attempting to be a good ‘householder’ first before you attempt monkish things.

Focus on practising the five precepts to perfection and get a meditation routine instead of ditching your gf. I’m sure there’s a lot of work to be done.

Only once they age and get neutralised/incorporated. They start out radical.

You've been possessed by a demon. Go to Greek Church and speak with your local Orthodox Priest.

In fact, this juvenile idea that you need to withdraw into the jungle to reach enlightenment is “lukewarm” Buddhist practice. The realization of self-nature (or lack of self-nature) can be done anywhere. Buddhism is not an external fad of wearing robes and living in a cave off of cockroaches and bamboo leaves, it’s an internal practice, you shallow spiritual sight-seeker.

Have you read the Nikayas, or do you just read pop Buddhism books? The Buddha makes it pretty clear that householders are too surrounded by sensual pleasures to reach true enlightenment "here and now". Yes, you have the very rare case of a householder reaching Nirvana or "non-returning" status, but it's said this only happens right at death.

This is why the world needs Neo-Confucianism, Stoicism and other naturalistic practices that combine contemplation with social engagement.

Humans are built for social existance and only flourish in society, there is nothing 'truthful' about sitting alone with your thoughts for months on end.

OP, I've been where you were, and trust me, the things you are feeling bad about are NOT due to you being unenlightened. Buddha's teachings may have helped you become aware of these negative feelings, but pursuing Buddhism further whilst ignoring what's ACTUALLY going on is a mistake, to be frank.

Rather than try and escape from society and go and join a monastery, really just spend some time with your own emotions trying to figure out just why it is you feel bad. Odds are, you probably have unresolved family / friendship / financial / emotional / body image / etc. issues that you just haven't dealt with, and now you've come to the point where you have to face them.

Start a diary. Talk to friends about how you're feeling. Hell, talk to your GIRLFRIEND. Ask for help. Read some books. Spend as little time as possible in distractions like video games or drinking, and allowing yourself the room to just feel whatever it is your feeling.

But don't throw the baby out with the bathwater and fuck up your life because you pursued something you weren't actually keen on pursuing.

Remember - enlightenment is a life-long process. Even monks who spend a couple of years in intensive meditation and have a lot of spiritual experiences speak of needing to refine their practice up until their death. These things take time. Start slowly, where you are, and build yourself up.

Technically corrected, but often used as an excuse by people unwillibg to put in an effort and make sacrifices, especially in Western hippie boomer Buddhism.

And the temptations normals had back then are nothing compared to now.

If anything a retreat from worldliness is more important these days.

But relaying on ideas and daydreaming is precisely what got him unhappy in the first place.
