A more interesting question would be how prevalent in modern culture it is to be incapable of distinguishing between loneliness and solitude. In my native tongue, there is no distinction between the two - it is one word for both, but it has taken on the connotation of the former entirely. Vindicating the distinction, I've never felt acutely lonely when I am alone, only when I am with people.
