Because reading, unlike watching films or playing video games, is something that is meant to be experienced by one person on their own, at their own pace. The only way you can share your reading interest/experiences with someone else is by commenting on something and giving your opinions about it.

The answers vary a lot, really.
-Some people do it to make up for their inadequacy at functioning in society
-Some people enjoy reading great books made by geniuses more than talking to average people
-Reading is solitary and the more you do it the more being alone reading books becomes enjoyable
Or whatever you can think of. With enough effort, we could reach dozens of possible answers.

A more interesting question would be how prevalent in modern culture it is to be incapable of distinguishing between loneliness and solitude. In my native tongue, there is no distinction between the two - it is one word for both, but it has taken on the connotation of the former entirely. Vindicating the distinction, I've never felt acutely lonely when I am alone, only when I am with people. This was posted a few days ago, and it's really quite nice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Vvdtaaprzw

Reading is a solitary activity sure but how does it follow that only the lonely read?

I'm married and very close with my wife but I like going to a coffee shop and reading on the weekends and she doesn't. So we do our own things for a while.

I regularly see threads that start off with a question, "why X?", where X is bullshit and nonsense, but nobody questions that and instead goes along and brainlessly assumes X is true.

You dont want to be on top of her 24/7 and vice versa. You should have time to do your own shit, and some of my own shit is reading. It's not some escape into fantasy worlds.
