Gravity & Grace. An even bigger emphasis on the individual, solitude, death, the void, the passivity of grace, the refusal of all consolation, especially religious.

She's fantastic

>In any case, when I imagine baptism as the next concrete act toward my entry into the Church, no thought troubles me more than separating myself from the immense and afflicted mass of unbelievers. I have the essential need — and I think I can say the vocation — to mingle with people and various human cultures by taking on the same ‘color’ as them, at least to the degree that my conscience does not oppose it. I would disappear among them until they show me who they really are, without disguising themselves from me, because I desire to know them to the point that I love them just as they are.
her theology might be untenable (even though she says the decision is personal and scriptural) but she hardly transgresses spiritual boundaries like the marcionists

also you have to love anybody capable of writing a plot like this.

>Le Bleu du ciel recounts the story of Troppmann's tortuous relations with three women who in his eyes are "emblematic of certain modes of being": the wildly debauched Dirty (Dorothea), unconcerned with politics and committed to orgiastic excess in all its forms; "simple," tender Xenie, who cares for Troppmann with slightly dull-witted devotion in his moments of moral and bodily collapse; and the austere Lazare, who maintains a cold, rational demeanor and has renounced worldly pleasure in the pursuit of the twin goals of political revolution and spiritual purification. Troppmann is attracted by all these women and the values they represent, yet the women's respective ways of life appear irreconcilable, and Troppmann cannot manage to make a choice. His profound confusion and ambivalence express themselves as hesitation and cynicism on the subject of political engagement and, even more humiliatingly, as sexual impotence with Dirty, the woman he desires most but with whom he is chronically unable to perform sexually.

warrants mentioning that the character of lazare is modeled on weil. a chemistry even more awesome than heidegger-arendt. god for the four of them to have gone on a vacation together and written ghost stories shelley-style. hnng.

this message board is supposed to be anonymous. anonymous! aaaarrg.

anyways i'm well, or as well as anyone is when they go plunging into christian mysticism and feel incredibly fascinated by it, like it was exactly the right thing at the right time. and nobody does this when things are all just going swimmingly, after all. but i'm one of those perpetually melancholy types for whom if things are going well i want to scream and flee the scene back to my dark and cobwebbed lair.

yourself?

im doing good, glad you're getting into mysticism a bit, check out boehme (and his relation to schelling, it'll tickle your continental fancy), eckhart. not crazy about particularly christian mysticism but they can smell what the rock is cooking. eckhart sounds damn near hermetic and zen at the same time sometimes.

enjoy

my library doesn't have much by her but i've read the two nyrb books (illiad: poem of force and the abolition of all political parties).
the former is very good (even if she's misreading the context as I read others, like Steiner, say about her) for turning a brutal war poem into an anti-war tribe, something like gandhi did with his commentaries on the gita. the latter was alright, if rigid, take on a political system (even, or especially, leftist ones) that's entirely based on compromises of justice/truth but then turned into mystical christshit.

i don't really get how/why she's so hyped (other than her romantic backstory/death) but if i find some other stuff by her, i'll probably read it. also she's fug
