Cease and desist the dissemination of Archon fact-fiction immediately or face the eternity of damnation beyond the walls of heaven. The syncretism of the twisted Archon deceptions of science and fiction is the most damnable of Archon indoctrination for Satanic glory. All who proliferate the publication of this most blasphemous of fact-fiction are the ultimate sinners. Repent.

im pretty sure thats what it was about too.
it was something about a space leviathan and many wanted to hunt it down because of some they have an organ that allows them to create wormholes or something. the story was about this obsessed admiral and his crew going after it. i think it was published in the mid 90s but i dont remember much else about it.

Yes, I already found another in the same chapter. Vodalus gives his pistol to the large man that Severian runs into, but just a paragraph later and the female has it instead

The first one I could assume was just an error by the author, but two mistakes within pages of each other seem intentional. Especially when one of them happens right after Severian boasts about his memory

Oh boy, finally. Got your image senpai.

I'm really glad I read this, even though I didn't want to at first.
It's pretty much great all around. Really fun, fast-paced and exciting. Funny, too; the way the Scientific People talk is just hilarious. Characters are interesting, too (something that's a relief after reading so much Asimov).

I honestly think this should be the default recommendation for someone's first sf book. It's short, fun and filled with many of the kind of weird setpieces and ideas that are part of the reason many people read the genre. It was also apparently quite influential - I didn't know that the twist where unexplained apparition turns out to time travel from the future is from the 1950s.

I also read the actual Count of Monte Cristo (it's a huge doorstopper btw and I'm not even sure if I read the unabridged version) and I think it's funny just how different the main characters of the two books are. Edmon Dantes is an honorable man who believes himself to be a tool of Providence; he punishes the guilty but never hurts the innocent, and in fact ends up helping them often (I remember the scene where he bribes the poor telegraph operator by giving him his dream house, orchard included). Meanwhile Foyle is a bastard who steps on anyone to achieve his goal (which he understands simplistically, at one point literally just deciding to throw a grenade at the ship he hates).
Then again this might be just a question of moral luck. If the only way to exact his revenge was to ruin an innocent person's life, would Dantes have done it?

Questions:
>main character?
Great. I like how completely amoral he is. It's not like philosophically rejects moral principles, it's that he doesn't even think about them.
But I also like how he's not an edgelord. He is generally not sadistic (except for the rape thing, which was a bit wtf to be honest. why did he do it if he already got Robin to do what he wanted via blackmail? it also made me feel like a brainlet because I somehow missed the implied rape the first time I read that paragraph and had to do a double take when I read it again.
>Defensible?
Well I consider myself somewhat of a consequentialist, so sure. Those people were very likely to have killed themselves anyway, so unless you can realistically help them, why not put it to good use?
>
Fuck Olivia, marry Robin, kill Jiz.
>Believable?
It's definitely believable if you don't think about it too much. It's hard for me to come up with what's wrong about it...maybe the existence of teleportation should be able to create some sort of perpetual motion engine, or something?
>Outer or Inner Systems? How do you think it ended?
I don't think there's enough context to decide who's in the wrong. The OS were basically not described at all.
I thought the ending implied that Foyle was going to teach everyone space jaunting? That would probably put an end to the war as they knew it.

In any city, in any country, go to any mental institution or halfway house in you can get yourself to. When you reach the front desk, ask to visit someone who calls himself "The Holder of the End". Should a look of child-like fear come over the workers face, you will then be taken to a cell in the building. It will be in a deep hidden section of the building. All you will hear is the sound of someone talking to themselves echo the halls. It is in a language that you will not understand, but your very soul will feel unspeakable fear.

Should the talking stop at any time, STOP and QUICKLY say aloud "I'm just passing through, I wish to talk." If you still hear silence, flee. Leave, do not stop for anything, do not go home, don't stay at an inn, just keep moving, sleep where your body drops. You will know in the morning if you've escaped succesfully.

If the voice in the hall comes back after you utter those words continue on. Upon reaching the cell all you will see is a windowless room with a person in the corner, speaking an unknown language, and cradling something. The person will only respond to one question. "What happens when they all come together?"

The person will then stare into your eyes and answer your question in horrifying detail. Many go mad in that very cell, some disappear soon after the meeting, a few end their lives. But most do the worst thing, and look upon the object in the person's hands. You will want to as well. Be warned that if you do, your death will be one of cruelty and unrelenting horror.

Your death will be in that room, by that person's hands.

That object is 1 of 538. They must never come together.

Larry Correia's book (a sequel in a "steampunk urban fantasy" series lmao) went up for nomination against a bunch of other sequels (including a zombie story which is even more lmao), a Stross novel about economics, the entire Wheel of Time series, and a space opera about a starship AI stuck in the body of a cyborg drone soldier and out for revenge that was "controversial" for using one set of pronouns.

I really like it. I liked The Demolished Man maybe a little bit more but that one kind of shot itself in the foot by writing a perfect 10/10 ending and then going on for another chapter and over explaining things that anyone who was paying even a little bit attention would've already gotten. Got quite a Christian vibe from the ending of Stars since Gully was kind of a messiah figure that would bring salvation to the world with his whole space jaunting thing.
Using antiquated transportation in a teleportation society as an ostentatious display of wealth I could certainly see happening. Since that's more or less already happening with stuff like vinyl records and vintage cars.
Marry Robin and ignore everyone else to be honest.
And Jesus Christ Neil Gaiman as always worming his way onto every book. He wrote the afterword on my copy. Does that guy even have time to write books after all his prolific blurb bullshit? I wonder where he finds the time.

Is it? Maybe I'm a bit under-read, but most of the historical hero figures I can think of were legitimate princes/kings or raised by wolves. I suppose that's what happens when the only people who can write down stories they self-insert into are already nobility

The classic examples of farm boy heroes I think of are all more modern examples, people like Luke, Clark or Dorothy.

I mean, I guess Heracles could count, but he didn't become a farm boy until he was an adolescent.

I liked the pacing and how shit was always getting done. Gully was a man on a fucking mission.
The war between the Systems seemed more to serve for convenient plot happenings. Most of the backdrop didn't make a whole lot of sense but anything involving Gully's path to vengeance was superb. I wasn't expecting a few of the twists.

I liked Snowcrash and Cryptonomicon and that book actually made me hate him. The whole opening about Chinese gold farmers/hackers and Russian mobsters connected via a overly-realistic MMO only Peter Molyneux could conceptualize was great, and then he staples a bunch of moronic shit onto it out of nowhere about terrorism.

I just started reading Meddling Kids because of the shilling. I'd give it 3/5 stars so far. I like some of what it's doing with the characters but this book should be more fun. I'm not a fan of horror so there's that but this is a mash up and I feel like the tonal shifts between wacky high jinks and eldritch horror are too broad. I don't mind the narrative style with neologisms and pov shifts &c. I'm going to keep reading it for now because I'm only at 15% but I drop a lot of books

I like Strange Horizons but they trend towards more literary stuff than these threads generally discuss.

Tor does monthly lists of everything coming out this month but they're mostly limited to the real publishers.

You know, I didn't mind Abercrombie subverting every generic fantasy trope, but it pissed me that he kept announcing it. That thing he kept doing in the narration and characters' internal monologues, where he'd go "If this was one of the storybooks, X, Y, and Z would happen...but this was not a storybook."

He does it at least once in every book of the first trilogy, and it's infuriating. By pointing out that he's subverting a trope, he's writing down to the audience.

I'm gonna shit on super sales too, if that guy wasn't so focused on tying shit up in some meta universe or some shit maybe the individual books would have a plot, the first one doesn't even have a villain, they're literally just attacked by faceless dudes over and over. Believable enough. At first I thought it was weird that it did not trigger an obesity epidemic but then I realized that there are limits on teleporting short distances indoors also.
>Who was at the wrong, Outer or Inner Systems? Also, why was Inner Systems such pushovers in the war? How do you think it ended?
At first it felt like the IS was in the wrong but then OS started bombing with extreme prejudice. Didn't matter much for the book desu. Considering time traveling and space jaunting is suddenly possible I don't feel like the war matter much anymore. Also, PyrE felt like an absolute meme.
