It's my home. I left a while ago, but I always come back for the sake of exposure, to learn more about people like me. It's a hivemind but also the opposite of a hivemind. I have read some of the most beautiful things I ever will here, I have seen some of the most filthy and reprehensible images and ideas. I listen to music and laugh and sometimes people will try to help me here.

I've read stories about people who have it much worse than me, I've read stories about people with unimaginable wealth. It's like a mirage though, since I'll never know if a single one is true. Exploring this site is like exploring an unknown city in the darkness without a map, for the very first time, every time.

But, at the same time, it's never felt more familiar

It's where you can exist clearly, independently of the tyranny of the now and there. Who or what you are matters not. This place is a blessing and a curse. It gives us respite from a reality that demands constant ontological sacrifice, but it also offers us a placebo, an away place, to this reality. It is a drug and we cannot live without it.

Culture, community, and creation without the burdens of being attached to a permanent identity. The site doesn't see itself as a collective whole, but split between boards, if not cancerous generals. On these boards, there is no permanent "culture," it's culture being driven by what is posted in the moment. Anyone can post anything of any quality, and it still has a chance if sticking.
"Oldfags" are an archetype invented to keep some underlying standard of posting behavior and in reality never existed. This is in opposition to the "Newfags," which are any posters who do not fit the ideal mannerism or knowledge of whichever board community they join. It's an unspoken fact that how long you've been on this site doesn't actually matter and "oldfag cred" is meaningless. The past doesn't matter unless it is used to reinforce posting mannerism, and even then this doesn't warrant much. What matters is what is being posted in the moment, not what was posted or what can potenially be posted. Trying to compare the disparate communities of 4chan to real-world society or identity-based active forums like reddit in terms of culture is absolute nonsense that many fall for.
The site is run on content, ideally original, whether it be written or image-based. It's the rawest demonstration of the darwinistic cycle of memetics, a cycle which can only be maintained through the introduction of new content, lest it become depressed and collapse through endless derivatives as seen on certain boards.
It's this need for new content without the worries of identity being talked to it that has given the communities of the site as a whole a slight edge in internet memes and why many posters have a disdain for posters from more derivative-based communities like Reddit and even other boards on-site like /pol/ and /r9k/. New content is just considered better.

Just my thoughts from using the site continuously and being part of multiple boards for the past 4 years.
Oh, and all memes are consciously forced in one way or another and that's a good thing.

I would describe it as an amalgamation of the scrawlings seen on bathroom stalls, although sometimes it would seem more like the scribbling on the floor of a sanitarium. Some posts are confrontational, contrarian and unnecessarily vulgar, while others are profoundly insightful. Some writings display the symptoms of total rejection of contemporary human values. Many times I mull over the sheer volume of users who undoubtedly have been starved of human contact, living in untold emotional squalor with other lepers. But on the other hand, you can see these same people talking about their passions with like minded individuals, in a manner unique and unparalleled in terms of its genuine pursuit of fun. This unfortunately has been eroded over time by global increases in cynicism, however.
