What do you love about Hesse? If you dislike him, please articulate why.

the fact that this has no replies after 2 hours proves that this board is saturated with pseudointellectuals

Dont have much time but I wanna give a short answer.
I love his writing style. The flow of words seems so unbelievably natural (at least in german, I dont know how good the translations are).
His magnum opus is Narziß und Goldmund, his most overrated Der Steppenwolf, his worst is Unterm Rad.

Have only read Steppenwolf. What would you say is the best starting point if one would want to start reading his stuff?

It proves that it's a slow board.

I only read Narcissus und Goldmund and I was kinda underwhelmed. He is hyped up as someone great and deep. His characters aren't very interesting, his plots are also kind of a slog. Theme was interesting and some ideas, comparing completely different characters and stuff like that, but they weren't very profound honestly. However, I do find myself going back to it, thinking about it. I can't say I like or dislike him, but I don't understand what the whole fuss is about, he's not that great. I will read another book of his to see if perhaps, he shines more in his other works, to be more precise, I'll check out Siddharta& Glass bead game .

Siddhartha is very enjoyable because it's all so concise and well-written, being I think only 90 pages.

Not this anon, but reading siddhartha is obligatory

I'm lukewarm on Hesse desu, some people hate him on here from what I picked up, but I rly dont see a reason why... he's like your chill hippie grandpa. I dont particularly love him but I have read most of his works; Steppenwolf and Demian are my favs, I think Narziß&Goldboy is underrated, Siddhartha is overrated, I recc reading GBG last, since its more rewarding when ur familiar with his work - peace!

I think Demian was the best one. For a bildungsroman it's a nice little book. It got me into Gnosticism.

Most people will argue that he's specially appealing to male young adults who are having an existential crisis.

I was unimpressed by Steppenwolf
Midlife crisis got you down? Drink some wine, smoke some hash, fuck a slightly whoreish actress and listen to some jazz. YOLO lol.
