What are some books about characters who 'fake it till they make it', or present an external self radically different from the internal?

Not really a novel but check out street poison, biography of iceberg slim. It's about a guy who grew wanted to be a pimp but fucks it up a number of times despite being quite successful as he grew older. He then quit pimping to become a pretty influential novelist in the black community in the late 60's and 70's. You'll soon see that pimping is essentially fake it till you make it
