I turn 22 years old in October. Are there any essential books I should be reading at my age?

>> No.11391569

Bump and, do you feel old Anon? I've just turned 23 and I do.

>> No.11391588

It really depends if you feel that you are "complete", and by that I mean complete in "inner" way. You can learn all the useful skills (like cooking or doing taxes), but without the sense of some kind of fulfilness all of this will look bleak to you. Do you enjoy everyday? Do you sometimes stop just to appreciate the weather, the trees, beautiful flowers or blue sky? Are you in peace with yourself? Do you strive to change? All of this questions are really important. I will be turning 22 in November as well, so I know the feeling very well. Luckily, about 6 moths ago I really got into buddhism, taoism and hinduism, which really helped me, both spiritually and in a material way. Do you have any specific topis on your mind, anon?

Sometimes I do but lately I've found that by learning new things everyday I've managed to slow my perception of time. It's kinda cool because the past 3 months have felt like a year. Sometimes I feel like an old man but these days I've come to appreciate that I'm still young and can do anything with myself.

Nothing in particular, I just like to see what sort of things people my age read and see if there's some sort of trend. I too have gotten into East Asian philosophy lately. It's influenced my perspective on life a lot. Daoism is a trip! I'm glad you're reaping the benefits as well!

How? You’re literally at the prime of youth. This is where you’re at your physical peak, have reached maturity al and supposedly out of college so you’re finally in the real world and not with your parents. This is suppose to be one of your most fruitful decades.

If you like Daoism, you should definitely read about Zen, the beautiful child of Daoism and Buddhism, it has some really intriguing concepts to think about.

A lot of material out there is just jacking off or ramblings just to sell something. Your hardest job reading wise is sifting through the trash.

Your life is short, so read something inspiring that will move your butt to do something -or- give you an honest view point from other people to either better understand people or change your own views.

Bumping for interest, I'll turn 21 next week and I have no idea what I'm doing with my life. Hang in there buddy, you're not alone on this journey. But if you still care for some juvenile advice, I can very much recommend you "The Art of Loving" by Erich Fromm. It hugely influenced the way I think about the concept of love and the human condition in general.

>>11391588
Cool, I also got into Hinduism and Buddhism recently. Currently I'm reading the Baghavad Gita, it's really enjoyable and the metaphysical speculations are very entertaining, but I don't think I got much out of it in terms of life advice. Any recommendations for introductory texts in Buddhism/Zen? (Siddhartha is on my reading list for quite a while now btw)

Are you a realist or an idealist? The idealist doesn't mind reading something that appears of little or no practical value because reading is then about satisfying philosophical and spiritual curiosity, which may have practical value in theory, but rarely is anything that you can use as a skill for making money. Soft power yes.

Realism favors literature that is pragmatic and of use in the real world. Hard power.

As a young person, you are in a dilemma between balancing the need for spiritual curiosity and sharpening your practical skills to remain stronger and smarter than your competitors. This inherent need to remain more knowledgeable comes with the competition of capitalism.

My advice is be pragmatic, but dont forget to have values and core principles, but none of that cringy Aurelius /pol/ pseduo-philosophy. Develop your own sense of perception of the world by critically examining your own as well as the thoughts of others and always remember how painfully incompentent and unwise you are forever.

Shoutout to any anons whose value systems are predicated upon their capacity to create things. When I'm not completely in a flow state I'm either reading some entry-level finance books by Robert Kiwosaki, some Robert Greene ("Mastery"), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Camus' "A Happy Death" / "The Plague", some Kerouac, Paulo Coelho, Hermann Hesse, Huxley...whatever. Been too busy to sit down lately to actually read though-- been composing and filling a journal off of a massive literary cram I did 6 months ago.

I would say Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde. It changed my life. The story is not the same as the movies would have you believe. Dr. Jeckyl is just as nasty as Mr Hyde but he refuses to let others see it. It is a fantastic book about hypocrisy and deception. It showed me a dark mirror of myself that I did not want to admit existed

I'd say I'm a bit of both. I have days when I'm extremely pragmatic and days where I'm curious about everything and anything. I'd like to strike the perfect balance between the two as I'd imagine they compliment each other quite nicely.
