I underline and bracket around sentences and paragraphs for various reasons. Sometimes they’re the main point of the book, sometimes they’re just good pieces of writing, maybe they’re iconic, maybe they have personal meaning and I relate to them. I also annotate nonfiction and stuff so I can understand it better on my rereads.

I’ll post a few examples when I get home. It’s actually pretty helpful when I’m rereading a book and just trying to better understand it.

Also, economists and philosophers like to make up words and phrases, so I sometimes keep notes in the margins on what everything means.

This. If you're trying memorize and learn things the best way is go about it is retrieval practice. Literally make flashcards and quiz yourself in short, regular bursts until you can answer everything on your cards without peaking.

For the love of god highlighting is for brainlets

I made a thread about this a while ago: >>/lit/thread/S11297860

I annotate in preparation for essays / a thesis I have to write, but I incorporate that skill in whatever book I’m reading. It allows me go back and know what I was thinking at the time.

If reading is a conversation with the author, paraphrasing/summarizing is a listening skill, one I exercise with the author. I ask questions to him/her, I evaluate, and thread common themes throughout the book, or in reference to other books. Deliberate reading is a dialogue with the author, and hopefully I/we can do this exact same exercise, and converse about our conversations with the author :)

same. i write in margins, label on the top margin, sometimes i write on the side of the book, closed, making a mark on the page that's visible when the book is closed for important ideas, and usually make my own additions to the index

w/ nonfiction*, w/ fiction i at most underline or dogear meaningful pages, parts

I have a few complete/basic works of ____ books that only have notes in the most well known sections.

I often write in books and I tend to buy cheap paperbacks for that reason. Sometimes I end up not having a pen/pencil so some books are only part annotated.

Funny story there is a copy of being and nothingness with my notes in it floating around my city.

Marking a book in any way is disgusting. If you absolutely MUST then put a stick note in the book and mark on that.

Yeah that's what I do. Basically my system is:
>making horizontal notes on the content next to the text when headlines, section titles, etc. aren't provided
>making vertical notes or notes at the top or bottom with my own personal thoughts
>marking sparingly certain key phrases or choice wordings that'll be a bother to find on a second read
I don't bother much with the second point any more, I usually think my notes are shallow or wrong on the second read, and I generally don't bother with notes/markings at all if the book is thoroughly indexed.
Pic sort of related, I'm guessing this is what people mean when they say notes do nothing but give you a sense of accomplishment.

Both are shit, best way to learn is taking notes. trying to break things down and take your own notes of fundamental mechanisms and how consepts relate to eachother. You don't have to memorize the things you truly understand

I only take notes if I’m correcting an error, or trying to explain things better than the people who did the diagrams.

Which means I take notes constantly for mathematics texts and certain economists like Keynes get marked up tremendously, because Keynes is a terrible economist.
