My girlfriend complained about epistemology a few weeks ago and said something like "I don't understand the point, what's the good in writing about 'the truth' if it means something different to everyone?" and I just said "you just made an epistemological claim"

I have talked to people who have never read about philosophy about Kant, if you guys wanna get them interested just ask them "What is knowledge" Almost everyone who has thought about this without reading or a background comes to the empiricism conclusion if you whittle them down "But where does knowledge come from" Etc etc. You can then branch this into Kantian metaphysics and start a really good conversation! that is if you have read at least half of the critique

Yes but since I myself am not experiencing this terminal illness, and cannot know for certain if the other person is or not, or how genuinely their suffering truly is since they simply have lower pain thresholds and are therefore embellishing, I cannot trust any report from an exterior source in regards to this situation, and so "excruciating terminal illness" cannot logically be used as a reason for suicide

But, you will argue, you can imagine yourself in such a situation. Yes, but I am not in it now. But if you were to be in it? Then I could imagine all of the situations in which I was not under such extreme duress as equally valid possibilities as which the terminal illness now stands to me at this moment, with the same reality value, that is to say, none whatsoever. So the THREAT of a terminal illness cannot be used as a reason. But what if I were to genuinely be afflicted by one? Then there is morphine. But no morphine? Now we are just being ridiculous

There are literally no reasons for me, as I am as I am, to commit suicide. All of your promptings can be reduced to irrational appeals or phatic trivialities, but reasonably it is impossible for you to convince me that there is ever a reason for suicide in light of the Infinite freedom posited by Nihilism (infinite in the sense that I possess the totality of it immediately, in every moment that IS etc).

Please don't be so pedestrian in your arguments against the immaculate resource of human existence that Nihilism situates itself as. You cannot refute me.

I don't actively go looking to talk about philosophy, but my friends and family all know me as something of a boffin who's head is full of weird esoteric ideas that sometimes leave the privacy of his head.

I usually just let conversations take their course, and if an opportunity to talk about philosophical ideas presents itself (it usually does) I just drop some random theories about group psychology or metaphysics or whatever and then people start talking about it in whichever form suits them.

A philosopher's work is never done.

The entrenched government-assisted academic's motivation is one of stagnation. Ayn Rand represented a philosophic paradigm shift of a magnitude only twice before witnessed in the persons of Aristotle and John Locke. This carried very grave implications for a particular breed of academic (this is also the perogative of /lit/'s small to medium r/philosophy neetfag contingent). Ayn Rand's Objectivism posited conceptual integration and the true nature of the conceptual faculty on a level no other philosopher had before. She also coined many original logical fallacies, the term/concept "psycho-epistemology", and was the first to identify the true nature of Altruism's evil. Including it among their (academics) other disparate half formed, half actualized "philosophies", they find it eats everything it comes into contact with. This disrupts their vested interest in keeping a fanciful salad-esque collection of philosophies to catalog away and do nothing objectively meritous with it on their own terms. Despite what these sorts of people would have to say it isn't Ayn Rand but academia as it stands that is "the joke".
I have named this phenomenon "Collectathon Philosophizing".

Plato, I'd say. A qualified reading of Plato, that is, something that is unfortunately all too rare. Kierkegaard uses pretty much the same shtick that Plato did - Kierkegaard with pseudonyms, Plato with dialogues rather than manifestos. While Kierkegaard is heavily inspired by Hegel, don't forget that he wrote his doctoral thesis on Socratic irony. He is heavily inspired by Platonic dialectics as well.
