11281106 No.11281106 [Reply] [Original]

This is the official summer reading thread for this summer's choice of /lit/'s book club: Don Quixote by Cervantes. This was decided in a poll in a previous thread.

FREE COPY FOR SCREENFAGS: http://learnlibrary.com/don-quixote/index.htm

You can order the book online from amazon for around $5 depending on the cover art etc.

There is no official translation for this reading group, but Grossman seems to be agreed upon to be the best.

This thread will appear every Sunday and will focus on discussion of the book up to the chapter we are currently at. There will be a reasonable amount of pages "due" per week, and discussion will only go as far as those pages include.

This first official post will be this Sunday, on 6/10. You have until Sunday to pick up the book, but the first thread will definitely have a lower page count in order to accommodate people who hadn't managed to buy the book within the next 4 days. After that, the page counts will even out.

Order it on Amazon to get it before our first day of book club, or read along in the free version until you can find it at your local second-hand store. Thank you everyone! Here we can discuss the book and other book club things.

Have the book by Sunday. The first thread will be pages 0-30. You could honestly read that before the thread even reaches its bump limit.

This is so that people who didn't hear about this today, or are waiting for the book will be able to easily catch up to us on week two, since they'll only be 1 hour or so of reading behind.

Thank god fuck ignite jest that shit is autism incarnate. No fucking way I'm sifting through 2000 pages of pseudo-mind-fuckery for the congregation of faggots that is /lit/

It actually hasn't really been a problem in the past times we've done this. I suspect that is because it's not really a problem on the board culture in general, and also, other readers don't want to rob you of reading. Or maybe mods just delete and ban, idk. I remember that too. But I think DQ is a good choice because it's not as dense and not as """high-brow""" as Infinite Jest or Gravitys Rainbow. It's not only shorter, but it's also an easier read, and one that's more accessible. It's also more centrally planted in general literature zeitgeist, whereas GR and IJ are more like memes due to how complex and deep they are. DQ is just a start-to-end adventure novel with humor and action and it has philosophical discussions but they aren't as ungraspable at those other two.

I have high hopes in this one. The book choice is perfect for a reading group. Do it with us!

Also, since you've seen these before, do you have any advice on things to do, things to avoid for a /lit/ reading group?

>> No.11282112

I commend these threads for their ambition to read great works of literature but they are usually so stupid. I hardly think that anyone is going to finish reading this massive book through a lit reading group. You guys keep making the same mistakes by taking works that are way to long and hard. I just remember the novella thread from a few months back when they started with Ficciones and I think that was the only book a few people went through and it stopped after that.

Who treads these level lands of gold,
The level fields of mist and air,
And rolling moutains manifold
And towers of twilight over there?
No mortal foot upon them strays,
No archer in the tower dwells,
but feet too airy for our ways
Go up and down their hills and dells.
The people out of old romance,
And people that have never been,
And those that on the border dance
Between old history and between
Resounding fable, as the king
Who held his court at Camelot.
There Guinevere is wandering
And there the knight Sir Lancelot.
And by yon precipice of white,
As steep as Roncesvalles, and more,
Within an inch of fancy's sight,
Roland the peerless rides to war.
And just the tip of Quixote's spear,
The greatest of them all by far,
Is surely visible from here!
But no, it is the Evening Star.

100 pages a week is a good rate, thats about 15 pages a day. Other people are reading other books too, ontop of their real life respnsibilities. At this rate slow and fast readers alike can absorb as much as they can, since this is a dense book and page/hr is an abirtary rate and differers from what you read.

Look at this big bitch.

Although apparently Ornsby is the most """true to the source""" translation, which is also what they said about Lattimore for the Iliad, and that was unbearable.

Although I think for different reasons. The dialogue was Ancient Greek shit and the book was full of prayers and ritual sacrifices for goats and prose that would be faithfully considered "bad grammar" in modernity. So hopefully a "true to the source" translation of DQ will merely mean equally common references to historical places and events and not shit like boat prayers or 300 times repeated goat sacrficial rituals.

The prologue felt really honest, heartwarming and it made me chuckle. I was intimidated by the book but Cervantes did a brilliant job of easing me into the novel by the meta jokes, the brutally honest admissions, and at times even self-deprecating humour. It felt comforting because I haven't read any of the philosophers that he named because he hadn't cited them (readlet here).

The sonnets then confused me but I got used to them and it's funny how much they exaggerate Don Quixote but I still don't understand the underlying purpose of it? Are they all supposed to be idylls of Quixote?

The first chapter was alright, a nice introduction to the plot of the novel, can't say much more about 5 pages. The historical references and other references to chivalrous books of the time feels off-putting at first because I have to look them up a lot.

There are lots of references to Christian and religious stuff but it's not a focal point and it's usually talked about in a humorous way. It's not about religion, but even if it was why couldn't you enjoy that if you're an atheist?

Ramón, tienes el privilegio de leer el Qujote en su idioma original pero piensas en rebajarte y usar una lengua anglosajona. Respetate un poco.

Page count is stupid but that shouldn't mean one chapter per week for a book with 126 chapters in total. 6-7 chapters a week will mean 21 weeks and is perfectly doable at around 50 pages.

One "part" a week (rather than chapters) might be too much but is also very doable.

No point in making another one when the official prologue + first chapter thread occurs tomorrow.

ATTEMTION EVERYONE: Assigned reading is as follows:
- Author's Prologue
- chapters 1-8

We will formally discuss this tomorrow. So start reading! Again, the first thread won't be as much reading as usual because some people are still getting their books and I want them to be able to catch up easily. Make sure you read the prologue by Cervantes too, since it's an important part of the book. Have your thoughts and questions and ideas ready by tomorrow evening. Thanks everyone!!

it should be arranged sensibly around some plot points by someone who's read it, so you're certain you're going to have something to discuss every week
50/100 pages is a ridiculously small number for a once a week thread, isn't a reading group supposed to encourage you to read more?

I will be reworking this chart very soon, sometime today. But the only notable change is that the first week will be 1-8 not 1-12. I'm also going to add page numbers in the form of "0-85" for example. Otherwise an great and accurate chart. The extra four chapters will be spread between weeks 2 and 3.

>> No.11294548

>>11294539
Yea, we're going by chapters. The lower bound of assigned reading will be 100 or so pages. The first week will be light so that we can include the prologue (required) and any other preface stuff people want to talk about + the fact that no everyone has their book yet, and so we want to make it easy to catch up to week two.

These reading groups always fade away because the OP is a retard who wants to read the whole book in 2 weeks. Sorry anon, we're not all NEET patricians here. It can work if we follow a systematic approach over 10 weeks.

100 pages a week works out to around 14 per day. That's like a half hour of reading a day. I guess for the degenerates here that's ok.

I did the same thing for IJ which took me months to finish.
