He's got some powerful poetry, but most of his prose is mediocre.
Dimitar Dimov is the best, followed by Fani Popova-Mutafova.
The problem with Bulgarian literature is that communism pretty much made it impossible to have normal writers, let alone them getting famous outside the country.

Anyway, the best Balkan author is Nikos Kazandzakis and I say that as a Bulgarian who has a low opinion on the Greeks as a whole, so none of that Greekboo shit.

Ivo Andric is another contender but I haven't read that much from him.

Art doesn't thrive in a totalitarian society. Everything should go through a committee to determine if the story and characters obey the party line and all that bullshit. That's one of the reasons historical (medieval) fiction became a popular genre, you don't have to mention communism (that much) or how great Russia is (that much).

No, these aren't the best ones. Even the others I have mentioned aren't the best ones. Not enough translated literature is available, so for me its not possible to make a complete list.
But I like Ante Tomic and Ugresic is well known in Bulgaria and several of her books are translated. Nevertheless, I have noted to proceed with caution.
If you want to share someone with us, then please do. I, for example, would recommend Milen Ruskov, but there is only one book (and not the best one) translated, because his language style just doesn't allow it.

Wait, I'm a retard, didn't notice that you were bulgarian, assumed you were a croat.
IMO Tomić used to write very funny weekly columns but his longer stories (I've read Što he muškarac and watched Ustav RH) are watered down too much, and the latter is by-the-numbers leftist moralizing. (But he is very successful and popular, that I have to admit.) He's definitely not someone I'd pick as a great or particularly notable Croatian writer.
Ugrešić is a fine writer, but, again, not that notable when compared to our classics.
As you say, the translations of our lit are sporadic and random, so you end up with this situation where you can't find canonical, excellent writers in foreign languages, but can read some Ante Tomić in Bulgarian. Nonsense.
Admittedly many of our best writers were poets, so translations would have to be really, really good to convey them properly.
If you want more Croatian lit I recommend Ranko Marinković's Cyclops (together with Krleža's work, the most important croatian novel of the last century, it's kind of like Ulysses lite). It was translated into English recently and allegedly was received very well.

I got a book called Short Stories from the Balkans, it contains some really funny and interesting stories, the writing style and similes those people use are very particular. Any recommendations?
