I'm so fucking glad the 9/11 mania has finally started to die down. It was fucking annoying having to pretend to be all somber and shit on a random September day each year.

the gov brainwashed the population into being ok with killing journalists and constant totally inexplicable warfare in MENA/AFrica, also they passed a ton of legislation that makes it perfectly legal to spy on and indefinitely detain civilians, and allowed themselves incredible powers for emergency "terror or natural disaster" situations where the military and agencies like FEMA or the DHS take over all policing and LEO duties. So, that's what changed, and it traumatized all the boomers and gen x fags addicted to the news media. We grew up in the miasmic haze of a pernicious atmosphere of perdition and self-aggrandizing programmed outrage. Bigger deal now is Trump, the second 9/11 for the Boomerfaggot race.

It made America feel unsafe like we haven't in recent memory. To this day people are terrified of terrorism, despite the risk of dying in a terror incident being far far far far lower than say, being run over by your own car.

Also it was immediately used as a huge source of propaganda. Like the government shooting down the third plane but then claiming it was some heroic passengers that saved the day and crashed the plane in the middle of nowhere.

in the US, the entire five estates kicked the cultural programming into maximum fearmongering overdrive. fear culture has always been a part of american society (well, anglo society really) with the red scare and whatnot, but things really took a turn for the absolute worse with the nonstop national security propaganda mixed with mass surveillance and invasion of individual privacy. terrorism became a serious perceived threat and every US citizen, as codified by the patriot act, became classified as a potential terrorist. this completely eroded trust between americans. you can really see the reverberating effects today, where people just seem to be a bit more on edge, less trusting, more paranoid. odd cultural phenomena, like the whole sexual #MeToo fiasco (which is an entirely reciprocal situation) i believe can be traced to the erosion of trust post-9/11. it was just such a severe change to the collective conscience.

what happened in y2k beyond overplayed fears of coding mishaps? was five, but as far as I can tell from pop culture January 2000 to September 2001 was basically the same as the 90's culturally.

It reminded americans that [current year] is not necessarily the end of history and the beginning of a hedonist era of conspicuous consumption free from larger trials and tribulations like they assumed the post cold war era would be.
