Can I get some horror /lit/ recommendations? Books similar to The Thing and/or The Witch. I know the 40k books are probably scoffed at here but I really enjoy how descriptive they can be.

If you have already watched some horror movies, pleasure may be had in reading their novels/source texts and comparing and contrasting. I suggest "Who Goes There?", the original source text for the Thing franchise, and "The Hellbound Heart", a quick romper by Clive Barker which quickly led to the original Hellraiser film.

Pic related is an autistic comparison which I made between the original Who Goes There story and the adapted, completed 1982 Carpenter film.

The parts in this book that are horror will mess you up for life. Barker doesn't mince words when he's trying to disturb the reader. The parts that are not horror will make you sad that you can't cast magic called "raptures", or travel to save a world hidden within a magic rug.

Read it if you like weird fantasy books with talking animals.

While not entirely similar to what you're looking for, M. R. James is one of the best horror writers I've seen. While he wrote what are widely considered 'ghost stories' there are a few that don't seem as if they should fall under that description. 'canon Alberic's Scrapbook' is an example of this, and, while I like it, I don't consider it his best. 'A Warning to the Curious' is a great story of his. Brilliant atmosphere, and a great sense of foreboding at the fact that something is getting closer to the man the main character met.
Other than that, Lovecraft would be the obvious suggestion. I'd recommend 'The Whisperer in Darkness' or 'At the Mountains of Madness.'
I read 'Who Goes There,' but I can't really recommend it. If you've seen the film you've seen an adaption that improves on the source material, and the book will be a let down.

My nigga. Canon Alberic's Scrapbook made me shit bricks when I first read it. Very effective little story, clever how the horror happens as the character is immersed in his book and is oblivious to the thing creeping up behind him, exactly as you the reader are also immersed in *your* book, and oblivious to what ever is in the room with you. Real chills, does for reading alone in the night what Psycho does for showers

Sure here is my list of ones I'd consider at the very least "decent" but some do have rather lame endings tho so fair warning:

Salem's Lot
The Stand
The Running Man
The Long Walk
Pet Sematary
The Talisman/Black House
Misery
Gerald's Game

A lot of people do think highly of It and The Shining but IMO they haven't aged very well

If you are curious about his short fiction collections I'd recommend Different Seasons and Hearts in Atlantis.
