Couldn't stand it. The worldbuilding was neat but the story was boring.

Are there any good fantasy books that are entirely stand alone and self contained? I'm tired of everything being "Book 1 of 35 in the Fairy Faggot Chronicles".

>> No.11196273

Sanderson is an ugly writer. His prose is clunky and craftsman like at best. His world building is vast yet shallow. People sometimes mistake complexity for depth, but piling up details does not make something profound. I don't have anything against the concept of rules-based-magic, but I have yet to see it executed interestingly and in a way that did not require descriptions of pseudo-HUDs from video games or read like cut 'n' paste jobs from a table top game rule book. There was a show on tv when I was a teenager called Full Metal Alchemist that similarly had a magical science gimmick and it was overall handled much more interestingly and intuitively. Which brings me to how Sanderson writes very much like someone primarily influenced by anime rather than books, fantasy or otherwise. His works are crypto-shonen manga when it comes to character interaction, dialogue, and action and from the shonen genre his works inherent that distinct lack of stakes or consequences that stands in contrast to the overblown action scenes that take place. People jump over buildings, throw boulders, create explosions with their hands and then everyone casts a healing spell, someone says "heh, nothin persenal kidd" and teleports away rendering the whole exercise meaningless.

I would recommend his books only to kids aged 10 to 14 but I doubt they have the attention span for his 1000 page tomes.

Terrible. Only compliment I can give is that I like the cover. The last decade has seen a real drop in the artistry going in to the covers of fantasy and scifi books, the cover for The Way of Kings is at least pleasant to look at. It reminds me of a updated version of the classic 70's 80's airbrush style.

Has anyone ever interacted with someone who actually likes these books? What are his sales like? I have trouble reconciling his prodigious output with the overwhelming negative response to it. I guess someone must be buying.

I know a single guy that never got out of his teens reading-wise, never read any other fiction, no dune, no lotr, never even saw the movies, just never had any contact with fantasy his whole life and thinks about the books like some holy grail of complexity and worldbuilding

I saw a teen waiting at a train station reading one of his books once. He was a very sorry looking fellow to say the least.

Probably one of the few good modern genre fiction books. I read the first two books, and they were actually kind of fun

Terrible dialogue. Overall boring. Read the first two books while waiting for the new ASOIAF and kept being recommended this.

Recommend everyone not to read them- a huge waste of time.

I enjoy it. But, hey, that's just my opinion, man.
