I just wanted to take a look at the Arthas book, but turns out I don't have it anymore. Honestly, the only thing I remember is the scene where the horse dies, so it probably wasn't that great.

I bought it years ago because I got stuck at a train station, but I did finish it later on. It felt a lighter read than most books that I usually read, but that may just be the German translation. Might be a trend for things aimed at a younger audience.

The Female Man
>Four alternate selves from radically different realities come together in this "dazzling" and "trailblazing work" (The Washington Post). Widely acknowledged as Joanna Russ's masterpiece, The Female Man is the suspenseful, surprising, darkly witty, and boldly subversive chronicle of what happens when Jeannine, Janet, Joanna, and Jaelall living in parallel worldsmeet. Librarian Jeannine is waiting for marriage in a past where the Depression never ended, Janet lives on a utopian Earth with an all-female population, Joanna is a feminist in the 1970s, and Jael is a warrior with claws and teeth on an Earth where male and female societies are at war with each other. When the four women begin traveling to one another's worlds, their preconceptions on gender and identity are forever challenged. With "palpable anger ... leavened by wit and humor" (The New York Times), Russ both employs and upends genre conventions to deliver a wickedly satiric and exhilarating version of when worlds collide and women get woke.

Read the first few when I was in middle/high school and bingeing on fantasy and romance. When I heard the last books were getting published at once, I figured I'd finish it for old times sake.

The main characters are, by book 9, OP mary sues/gary stus, and I hate them both, but I almost think the author has accounted for that because the ending seems to be legitimately building towards the world ending and the author has said it's far from a happy ending. So I like that I get to watch the shitty star-crossed lover characters from my youth being ripped apart and failing at protecting the world.

I've been putting of reading this since I received it as a gift for christmas. In part because it's long and in part because of high expectations and fear of disappointment. Now I'm 1/4 finished and it's great. The prose is great, the characters feel alive and are interesting and there is a feeling of magic and spirituality over the book. An early chapter, a dream sequence, surprisingly reminded me of the Latro books, change, time and aspects of deities is a strong theme.

Just finished the second book of Three Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and holy fuck that ending
I thought this book was a lot stronger than Three Body Problem, which I already really liked but a lot of its charm for me came from that out-of-left-field twist about the whole thing being ayylmaos
This one was a lot more emotional and told a great story
Both with TBP during the description of the sophon lock on physics research and TDF with the Droplet fucking annihilating the entire fleet made me feel actually physically ill, like putting the human race in chastity
I absolutely loved the ending conversation between the Tri-Solarans and Luo, felt high-stakes but also kind of friendly, like old friends (or adversaries)
I did think this book was a bit more predictable with its plot points though, aside from all the Wallfacers' plans which were always thoroughly entertaining to hear getting revealed
From the title of the book alone I knew they were going to hit the allegory of the dark forest for galactic civilizations and I knew exactly how the "spell" was going to work, although that might just be my prior knowledge ruining the twist
Though I don't really know where they're going to go from here in the next book, seems like everything is wrapped up pretty nicely

All in all though one hell of a story, I absolutely loved it

These books start out quite heterosexually but are definitely targetted towards /cm/fags like myself.

First book is great. Second book is dumbed down. Third book looks like it's better than the second book from the 70%ish you can read from the google books preview -- it's not released yet but I'm unhappy that Jedao didn't get together with either Kujen for /y/ or Cheris (main girl) and instead got it with some literal random introduced in the last book and then gets NTR'd

>Ancillary Justice
Read the first book and not the rest, the rest are fun but never live up to the first. It's lots of tea drinking.

I know I'm going to get hate for this, but does anyone know any good Star Wars novels? Ideally stuff that doesn't connect to the movies or plays off of existing characters. I've already tried most of the novels that tie into the KotOR stuff, so I know that. But is there anything else? I don't want to go back to read about Luke and Thrawn and shit, and I also don't want stuff that "technically" takes place in Star Wars universe but has nothing to do with the Force or the Jedi/Sith. Is there any series that's a new timeline in the same way KotOR was? Again, it can even be fanfic if it's good, canon means nothing to me.

I think I also stopped at Abaddon's Gate but I'm not sure. They introduced some female ninja-type character and that's when I realized they have no real story and they're milking their success for all its worth. While I might put up with Black Library's filler crap, I don't particularly like the setting of these books and the characters are totally unlikable apart from Bobby, so I stopped.
The show was a lot more cohesive but I'm not sure I'd say it's better. Maybe it would've stayed more focused longterm than the books managed to do.

It's not, though. The sun isn't extinguished in ASoIaF. Not only that, but this is just generic. Do you realize how many stories use that?
>those are the worshipers of the lord of light
>Those are the servants of the night king, the white walkers
Again, just typical fantasy crap. Light/Dark dichotomy. Not hard to come up with. Not to mention that in ASoIaF the LoL isn't "good" and the WW aren't "bad".
>Those are the three heads of the dragon, the three manifestations of azor ahai going to face the white walkers.
Again, three is a common number. You know what else has a three in it? Countless things. Including, you know, THE TRINITY. Even most novels have three main protagonists.
>Even the title has Lightbringer in it, which is the name of azor ahai's sword.
Again, typical fantasy crap.
You're looking for signs where there are none. ASoIaF itself is completely unoriginal and the whole point is that he's using cliches and turning them on their head (at least, that's the idea, he doesn't always do that). This sounds to you like it's similar because fucking any person could've come up with it. Not to mention that this is the background conflict in ASoIaF (assuming it's even a real one), and not what you're reading about 99% of the time.

I think it's a translation issue. There were several spots in 3BP where word choice or sentence structure seemed "clunky" in a way that screamed "bad translation". Also, Ken Liu said somewhere (in a foreword?) that he tried to preserve the "Chineseness" of some of the prose in 3BP.

Dark Forest didn't have those problems, and in fact neither does Death's End even though Ken Liu did the translation for that too. I suspect that Ken Liu ditched his efforts to convey the spirit of Chinese prose or whatever when he did Death's End, it doesn't have any of the problems of 3BP in that regard.

>Irrelevant. That's like praising an artist because he has 'masterful' brush strokes.
Except that we actually do praise artists for their technique all the time - ever taken an art class? As for Bakker, yes, his form is impressive, and his content only suffers from bad characterization and a sluggish pace. The actual worldbuilding, the philosophy behind it, the story itself is all wonderful. It's so clear that you haven't even read the guy.
Especially since you say,
>Fantastic literature is a literature of ideas, especially religious ones. Every half-decent fantastic work must be theological in nature.
You have not read Bakker, so don't even pretend. He takes philosophical and religious ideas very seriously.
>"Lol rape" and "lol shades of gray" is the opposite of great characterization.
I don't think you know what characterization means. Not only is what you said wrong, but it has absolutely nothing to do with characterization. When it comes to third person limited, Martin is an absolute powerhouse. It only takes a few pages with a character to get in their head and understanding where they're coming from. I can't think of a single other author in fantasy that does this - he's peerless, and thus the success of his work. He's not that deep in terms of his philosophy, sure, but in terms of storytelling he's an absolute master. ASoIaF is woven from stories within stories, with thousands of characters with their own arcs and plotlines, over the course of years - and you're never confused about what's going on when you read him.

And here I was thinking you'd have something meaningful to say, when it turns out you're just a stupid child begging for attention that knows nothing about writing an has no appreciation for anything that meets his arbitrary standards.

Prose is divisive, though I personally loved it. The main character, as I said, can barely speak, and she remains that way through the entire book. So her speech is very direct and blunt. For example: "You think are smart? I know you are know. You are stupid." and "Stupid Vortka. You do not please the God. You are a stupid man." If you enjoy or can look past those speech quirks, and also long descriptions of pools of blood clotting and people swimming in blood and people draining blood, it's great.

The pacing is nice, and if you like Hekat, the main character, you'll enjoy it. There are other characters, especially later in the book when her children begin to age, but she is the focus, and if you don't like her, you'll never make it through.

One of my main complaints about a good chunk of Heinlein is exactly the way he shoves some of his political belief down your throat, especially when he makes cartoony morons out of his political oponents. On the other hand, you come out of a LeGuin novel unsure about what she agrees and disagrees with. Fuck the names she chose for her characters and places, no matter how good a character Shevek is I still feel like it's something you stepped in.
