Based Anon.

I'd agree if you're well read minus Tolkien. If you're a new reader then the hobbit, lotr, sil and moving on to enjoy beren, hurin and fall.

Hurin is my favourite of them all. Great book.

Bringing this over from another thread, 'cause it's relevant:

To the question "Why did the races hate each other in middle earth?"

>Re: Elves/Men and Dwarves

This one is very easy. In the creation story of Dwarves, Eru gives real life to Aule's flawed work, made in an half-formed image of Iluvatar's Children to come, because Aule's act was done in childlike reverence for his father's plan - a proper worshipful act of magic/deed as opposed to Melkor's egoistic desire for dominion. However, as a form of punishment for the misdeed (even if done in ignorance and not malice), Eru specifically outlines to Aule that the Dwarves would sleep til the proper Children awoke because he wouldn't suffer them to usurp the true Firstborn's place and that they'd always be at odds with Eru's chosen Children, since they weren't of his direct making.

>Re: Men & Elves

Men and Elves have different natures, distinct "Dooms" as Tolkien phrases it. Elves are immortal but linked inexorably to Middle-Earth, fated to age forever with the world until its end. Even should their physical form die, their spirit goes to the Halls of Mandos until the end. Men are mortal and fated to inevitably die a death after which their fate is totally unknown to all save Eru Iluvatar. Elves grow old forever and get wearier and wearier, which is why the lingering Noldor in Middle-Earth by the time of LoTR are these mournful, other-worldy figures, especially those who've seen lost paradises across the sea. The energy and vitality of their race, that burned bright in the days of the Silmarillion, have waned. Men, however, are self-renewing because of their mortality and thus the two are to a degree incomprehensible to one another; the Elves find the Doom of Men weird as fuck and the Men covet the immorality of Elves because they don't understand the burden.

There's also history: the greatest of Men, the ones that fought alongside Elves in Beleriand against Morgoth, are pretty much all gone at this point (Aragorn's bloodline and the Dunedain representing some of the last good lines/clans remaining.) The rest of men are either from those corrupted by Melkor (the Easterlings) or other kind of wild men unknown in the days of the North. Most Elves don't have a lot of respect for men, because their mortality makes them easily corruptible.

>Re: Elves/Men/Dwarves & Orcs/Goblins/etc.

Orcs are heavily implied to be captured and perverted Elves, done so at the behest of Morgoth and as the direct work of Sauron (I think). Melkor was unable to create, only to warp, and all the dark and naturally evil creatures of his and Sauron's forces are twisted races of Elves and men.

Hope that clears it up!

I love everything Tolkien (even the 12-volume behemoth that is The History of Middle-earth), but I can't help but feel that the recent books are just repackaging old material that can be accessed just as easily (or even more easily) by reading Silm or HoMe.

>> No.11166198

I used to think that the Tolkien estate would maintain Christopher's opposition to filming any of Silm after he (Christopher) died.
However, now I'm not so sure. Although Christopher's views on it are well known, the movies (at least the LOTR movies) were received so well that it's hard to believe the estate would be opposed for very long.
I'm sure they won't do anything before Christopher dies, but I would give it at most 10 years after he dies.
In fact, I would expect that legal wrangling will start as soon as Christopher dies. I suppose someone could make the argument that since the story of Beren and Luthien is synopsized in the LOTR appendices, the people with the rights to make movies out of LOTR also have the rights to make movies out of that story.

I don't like that certain Elves seemed able to 'choose' to live a mortal life, ie Arwen. It seems to cheapen the 'Gift of Men' if Elves can just up and decide they want to go that route too if they wish.

Arwen was not an elf, she was a Half-elf.
Elves like Gildor or Legolas didn't have a choice.
All of Elrond's family had a choice, including Elrond himself. His brother chose mortality.
