Any rational belief can and should be justified, given a proper series of logical premises and conclusions. There is no need to have unquestioned, illogical beliefs.

Even though I don't agree with some of the axioms in his Ethics, reading him is quite enjoyable because of how well laid out his book is. It's stimulating enough without me needing to rack my brain trying to figure out what he's getting at.

Btw the axiom I take issue with is Axiom 4: that knowledge of an effect depends on knowledge of the cause.

What should i read before i read the ethics?

You can honestly dive right in. The book I have has an essay of his, On the Improvement of the Understanding, before Ethics. It's a nice supplement, but you don't need it.

You may want to look up what essence, existence, and substance typically meant at that time.

Why?

>> No.11155041

The bulk of my notion of God. Also how much of a brainlet I am along with 99.9% of other human beings. Reading the Ethics is like taking a direct look into a mind that will forever be greater than your own.

Interesting. Wouldn't you say that the third type of knowledge ("authentic" knowledge of essences) requires a complete understanding of causes in order for the effects to be truly understood rather than merely correlated or partially understood?

yeah dude how were his thoughts so organized? but also he was very much a product of his times
