Basic Economics - it is quite a long read and heavy if you have not read much economics before. Some chapters are quite dull (for me, the chapters on time and risk) but they are really important to read so that you understand the topics. Other chapters are really interesting, for example the chapter on minimum wage laws. At the end of the book he has a list of questions based on the content of the book with the respective page numbers so you can test yourself on what you remember. It's worth reading simply because he dispels so many economic myths and teaches you how to think in terms of economic efficiency

You can add Hayek on the list too if you really want, but please try to stick with the mathematical economists, at least they know what they’re talking about. Rothbard and Mises don’t understand how indifference curves work. It’s embarrassingly hilarious, and if you haven’t gotten the chance to you should read that article by the guy who doesn’t like Mises.

Also: most people who like Mises/Rothbard tend to like Sowell. So that, and the fact that he wants to legalize ALL drugs, says STAY AWAY.

I would say Irving Fisher is just passively really left: his theories are cool though. Like the Federal Reserve exists IN ORDER TO exhibit interest rate sine waves, while the demand fluctuates like a cosine, that’s the basic gist. Pretty cool way to view everything.

He was like Walras, everything in the economy moves in waves, but instead incorporated the federal reserve as a functional part of the wave, like if it didn’t exist the economy would just exhibit the same things anyway naturally.

Keynes is kind of the same way, but very structural.

Pareto is just an epic economist. His analyses span between high level calculus and Hessians of second order derivatives to complex graphical representations of exchange curves. A much more refreshingly difficult read than Mises simple polemics against the left.

None of these people are stupid though. We don’t hate anything that’s left. We’re not retarded. At this point, Keynesianism is almost conservative. Having the intelligentsia as opposed to small companies, direct the capital injections is a net gain for the economy if the Keynesian multiplier is true

But these threads aren't conducive to a meaningful discussion of his works.

Here's an idea: Let's discuss our first introductions to his works. My admiration for Sowell began with his appearances on Firing Line that I found on YouTube. My first dive into his works was with Race and Culture: A World View. That book really opened my eyes to the provincialism that plagues American politics. Sometimes I would be excited to read something new and check the associated reference to learn more only to find that it was a reference to another of Sowell's previous novels. That was simultaneously tickling and teasing.

The sad truth is, Economics is rife with pseudoscience where they narrow the complex political economy (nation-state particulars, environmental factors, homogeneity, interaction) into a few nice and easy to understand graphs and general assumptions. The world is not a vacuum.

I have been pecking at Basic Economics between novels, it's alot to digest but it's entertaining and insightful.
