There are tons of groups on meetup websites. These people tend to be shallow, old, and looking for a soapbox. They hide under random athiest or free thinking guises. They don't talk about any of the ideas, but instead gossip about meme news and imagine a meme world like the hippies.

You can’t escape Hegel, logically, he is 100% correct in everything he says in the Phenomenology and the Logic.

Nietzsche and Heidegger however, do challenge him and the way in which he grounds his logic, but they pretty much just end up rejecting logic, which is very existentially satisfying in light of depressing absolute logic is according to Hegel: no meaning, nothing absolutely perceptible, just thoughts negating other thoughts until it stops at some point.

I suppose Leo Strauss’ Natural Right and History is a part of the tradition against Hegel too now.

I would start with Frege's essay "On Sense and Nominatum", and look up the stanford encyclopedia articles on logic, first order logic, justification, Bertrand Russell, and Wittgenstein

After youve done that, maybe start studying logic proper, or go to Russell's essay "On Denotation" if you want to stick with language

Is recommending Strawson and Carnap too early if you are just now going to get into analytic philosophy. Ordinary language philosophy and logical positivism are two dead schools of thought and they dont start until later periods of analytic philosophy. Better to start with Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein, and then figure out what you like about it

>> No.11116834

>>11116761
Figure out what you like about it in what sense? Is there sort of a branching patch once you get past the core initial texts? If so, could someone maybe either explain or illustrate this for everyone? What makes you say that ordinary language philosophy and logical positivism are dead?

>> No.11116915

>>11116834
Figure out what you are interested in, in the same way as someone who gets into philosophy for the first time, you offer what you can for them and then they decide what they like. For example, logic and ethics are very different branches, and maybe you shouldnt just show ethics when they ask, what should I read in philosophy?

Yes there is a branching. Roughly there are those who stay with logic and have a particular view of language because of it, and those who reject the focus on logic and adopt a different approach when studying language. The latter is ordinary language philosophy, and one form of the former is logical positivism.

If you want to know why these two are dead, feel free to look up their summaries. There is an interview with Ayer, one of central figures of logical positivism, who himself says, its dead. Searle I think is the last main figure of ordinary language philosophy and he just recently committed career suicide.

If you want a bastardized but quick answer, logical positivism is dead because logic is not so simple and straightforward that it translates perfectly all cognitive content, and a complete and consistent system for solving all problems is almost certainly impossible thanks to Godel. Ordinary language philosophy is dead because linguistics has shown that language is not just a series of games that communities play with themselves, and that this metaphor is misleading
