Yeah, the positivists were wrong about the cogency of metaphysical propositions, but their conceptions of explanation, verifiability, the nature of scientific theory, and the analytic/synthetic distinction are all useful and we can still learn from them.

literally start with the greeks. Or get an introductory textbook. You'll at least get the rundown, but metaphysics extends to all branches of philosophy, including the specialized fields that have sprung up in the past century (philosophy of science, mathematics, mind, etc). Understanding how it all fits together takes time, so don't get discouraged and never delude yourself into thinking you know more than you do.

Best way to start reading philosophy is at the end of what your interest is. Then back trace through what that is built on, and subsequently ancillary readings will crop up as well as new avenues leading to different philosophical conclusions.
