The Sound and the Fury and No Telephone to Heaven are up there as well. No Telephone to Heaven is by Michelle Cliff, very bloody and tragic book about Jamaica, very beautifully written, I highly recommend it.

Levin resolving his spiritual crisis and the scene where he is looking at the sky, realizing that interpreting it as a blue rounded vault is just as meaningful as the fact it isn't, is my favorite part of the book. I reread that scene, and the part of Moby-Dick where Ahab almost turns back but can't fight his nature, fairly often.

Honestly rate this higher than Grapes of Wrath. It might have helped that my name is also (a variant of) Cal and I have a brother that seems more loved and accepted than me despite my hard work.
