Or is it just a fun story? How seriously should i take the theology in it?

Paradise Lost is an artistic expression, the only part you should contemplate seriously is the main theological argument:

It's a big part of Christian mythology, so there are an awful lot of Christians who unwittingly hold beliefs that stem mostly from it, but that aren't actually part of biblical canon.

You're probably correct, given that Milton rejected the Trinity, but that's not really a facet of protestantism in general and you'd be more convincing if you used his particularly heterodox views instead of appealing to tribalism.

All Protestants essentially make their own truth in terms of religion. They view the Bible as a book to interpret as any other; if one's interpretation is coherent and original, then it can constitute as a new sect. Catholics, on the other hand, believe in the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church which is without error in terms of moral judgement. Since Milton strays far from the Magisterium, he is certainly considered to be a heretic by at least 1 billion people on the planet.

Take that as you will. If you're a Roman Catholic, Milton is a heretic, but an interesting heretic to read nonetheless. If you're a Protestant, then you have no problem with him because he is merely following his conscience and interpreting what he believes to be authentic Christianity represented in the Bible and the writings of the Church Fathers.

Paradise Lost is blatantly heretical even within the limits of Protestantism. In fact, it commits the oldest heresy in the book: Arianism.

You know the bits in Heaven where God the Father is talking to Jesus, and there's a heavy implication that the Father existed before Jesus? That's a heresy. It nearly destroyed the Christian world in the beginning of the fifth century, and it's the reason we have the Nicene Creed.

So, no, don't take anything about the poem seriously from a Christian perspective. Just enjoy it for its brilliance as a work of art.

>> No.11030789

>>11027857
If that's the message of the book then it is anti biblical.

>For truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.

What about hell as punishment? I haven't read much of the New Testament, but from what I know, it either wasn't until Revelations or Dante where hell was a place for the damned. John 3:16 implied that, if not to accept Christ, the soul perished with the body. I've also heard (I'm not very well-educated) that the Jews, or at least the early Jews, have no concept of hell.

The crucifixion was predestined, not necessarily that those particular individuals should do the particular bad things they did to bring it about. That passage says nothing about free will.

Thanks, I'll keep a closer look. But one more thing: at one point is it revealed the serpent Eden was Satan? To my mind, God, or someone else representing a divine council (after all, Elohim is plural, yes?) was the serpent, "testing" Eve. So was it Milton that said, "Oh by the way..."?

I bought The Prince of this World a while back in order to learn more about the genealogy of the devil in Christianity but haven't read past the introduction yet, as is the case with most books I buy, so I can't say to what extent it would answer such questions I've also been wondering.

Take into account that most of this 'scholarship' is just trying to justify the new testament teleologically. It reads the old testament through a particular interpretation of the gospels, which is obviously misguided but interesting (and useful, if you want to know about Christianity) nonetheless.

We had to read it when I went to a private christian high school. Teacher made sure to hammer in our heads that pretty much all of its details are non-canonical but still had a big hand in shaping the judeo-christian mythos or atleast tge perception of it. Its like bible fanfiction. I remember thinking it was cool though. Pleb confirmed. Jesus =/= God and yes was the first of God's creations, even before angels and the world. Read the fucking Bible, don't just listen to what Christianity has become ie. Catholicism/Protestantism. It's blatant misreading and misrepresentation stemming from the corruption of Platonism in the early church.
