opinions on republic vs laws? have read republic and am finishing laws, enjoyed republic way more. They both go on a huge variety of topics but I liked the 'education' approach to the ideal society on republic rather than laws approach, although it is obviously necessary

Now if The Republic is the New Testament, the Laws is the Old Testament.

That being said, whereas The Republic has the general basis for how you, as an individual, can sacrifice yourself for your community, The Laws is the general basis for how the community can sacrifice itself for you.

The Laws has a bunch of laws. But you know that statement about evil basically generating from someone taking offense from something someone said without the person saying it taking correct criticism well? Well, that may have been the most complex, well thought-out social criticism I've ever read out of any book. So much so, that I think that I ascended 15 levels when I read that point in particular. That's in book X (?) I believe. The numerous laws of course, were also fascinating. Magnesia is not a place I'd soon forget.

But the justification for the laws was one of the more important facets, and those were arbitrarily thrown in between all the various laws. So it was a collection of very numerous laws and justifications for them.

But it also, like the aforementioned point in book X, has some extremely important digressions in political/social philosophy. Absolutely genius at points. I preferred this work to The Republic, but it's hard to say exactly why. Probably because it's more practical and has some things that the other dialogues don't have, while The Republic has many things the other dialogues have.

No Plato made his philosophy entertaining to read unlike the pseuds who came after him

Aristotle is interesting to read...

contrary, he says there's no problem with women ruling the state, becoming philosopher-kings

sexism is doxa for plato, there is no rational basis for it

I agree, the republic is kind of every topic in previous plato's dialogues up to the republic put together, while laws is more of its own thing. Its also an interesting way to put it as old and new testament. Just finished book 8 of the laws so there still a bit to go, and I already feel the need to re-read it (and other dialogues) to really see it coming together, since its my first time reading plato.

He's also boring as fuck. Plato's works are far more engaging and fun. Plato was just a far better writer than Aristotle

You do know that we are reading only conspects of Aristotles works? Some greek writer compared the style of Aristotles original writings to gold, whereas Plato's to silver. It would be interesting to see autistic ramblings of Aristotle in gorgeous prose

So he's interesting but boring??? Do you need your head checked?

His ideas are interesting but his writing is boring. It's pretty easy to understand but if you can't I think you're the one who needs his head checked

I'm not trying to change your mind, it is a fact that we are not reading first hand material

If it's interesting, it's not boring. Stop being stupid.

Now I think a better way to express this is 'interesting, but difficult', because you are basically complaining about the difficulty.

He also said they have to have the soul of a man in order to do that. And any man with a feminine soul is not fit to be a philosopher king.
