Learn and build from the masters of the craft. The African problem is more acute today that it was in Lovecraft's time; London is lost, Detroit is lost, Baltimore is lost, they occupy much of the North after the Great Migration, Europe and Australia are importing new burdens, South Africa is crumbling and so on. It needs a stronger response than Lovecraft offered, we need the modern students of the master to confront and defeat this monster in literary form to didactically teach modern man what is needed to be done.

Lovecraft has cosmic horror, miscegenation horror, shitty cosmic horror, and dream cycle stuff

The miscegenation horror like Rats is pretty good but less intuitively scary. A couple stories are like this, just "the protagonist finds out he's part of a voodoo cult and wanders off into the woods," not much else.

The shitty cosmic horror is the stuff that's just not very good, mediocre stories that don't quite come together. Call of Cthulhu is honestly like this.

Good cosmic horror is the stuff that makes you go "ohhh fuck," like when the dude picks up a mysterious object and looks into its glassy surface and sees a strange alien dimension but then suddenly gets the sinking feeling that something is looking back at HIM. That kind of thing is what he's most known for, but it's not present in all stories.

Dream cycle is arguably his best but is also weird and may not satisfy your craving.

There's arguably a fifth category which is "unnamed antiquity" horror, which often goes with cosmic and miscegenation interchangeably. The idea that you're in a city, for example, that's so ancient that the thing(s) that lived there regard(s) you being there as a trespass, or at least you get the sense that you are really really not supposed to be there. Mountains of Madness type deal.

When reading Lovecraft you have to shop around a bit until you find the stuff that you like. Try Haunter in the Dark or Colour out of Space.

Why do so many people think this? The only thing completely correct is the sickly part, everything else is misconstrued at best. I suppose if you define employment as working for another person/company full time, you could consider Lovecraft unemployed. However, he not only wrote quite a bit of his own stories, but also did revisions for other writers as a way of earning money. He was not at all like the NEET degenerates of today who sit around doing nothing but playing video games and watching porn. He also had a circle of friends (mainly other writers) who he corresponded with regularly. Lovecraft had sent thousands of letters to friends, family, and various acquaintances over the course of his lifetime, which doesn't seem like the behavior of a socially inept recluse to me.
