I've had a love hate relationship with continental and French philosophers but I have to admit my top 3 are probably French. Despite their love of obfuscation and eltitism the French have a wonderful talent for setting off bombs in academia, which reflects their national talent for strikes, rioting and revolution. Foucault, Lyotard, and Baudrillard all come to mind as iconoclasts who didn't give af about what their contemporaries thought. For that I love them. 19th century and early 20th century French philosophy bugs me a lot though. Sartre in particular.

I am convinced The French are actually the superior race.

I mean, if you look at their academic accomplishments it is profound. They have had hands-down, even to this day, the best economists.

Rousseau was honestly the best political philosopher, only after Machiavelli.

The Germans/British/whatever have nothing on them.

French seem like they're the farthest down the line in terms of metaphysical progress, always a few decades ahead with things like the revolution and po-mo. Basically down to them or Russia to save us now. France by breaking through modernism toward the future, or Russia by avoiding modernism by way of their backwardness and current state between antiquity and modernism and breaking off towards something different.

>694. The diehard rationalist (usually, a Frenchman) wants to discover everything about the universe without getting out of his chair, while the diehard empiricist (usually, an Anglo-Saxon) is so near-sighted he denies the existence of anything that's not sitting right in front of his nose, so it's clear that in both cases we are dealing with weakness: with the rationalists the short-distance kind — difficulty at close-range, difficulty with action — while with the empiricists the long-distance kind — difficulty at long-range, difficulty with thought. Finally, the Germans arrived on the scene, excelling at neither range but being pretty good at both, and that's how we at last got such towering philosophical monsters as Leibniz, Lichtenberg and Nietzsche — astonishing jacks-of-all-trades and polymaths like the world hadn't seen since the days of the Greeks — who scared the French and the Anglos so much they never wrote philosophy again (though the French at least tried, precisely because they were the rationalists, which is to say the theorists and writers. Writing therefore was all they had, so they weren't going to give it up that easily; while the Anglos didn't miss it all that much, since they were busy — first in the form of the British Empire and then the American one — with running the entire globe.)

All things become trivial when they are specifically posed.
What is your definition of "well posed"?
For example, the question of where to draw morality from in a post-god society?
I'm sure you could pose it in a way that appears trivial but if you take a second to consider the implications of what would happen if we chose to subscribe to an ethical framework without considering the ontology behind it you can surely see that it is not trivial at all

>For example, the question of where to draw morality from in a post-god society?
This is a trivial matter, evolution has ensured that we have a well prepared sense of those who surround us already, which means we can simply go with our feelings. You will probably tell me that feelings will change from person to person, so that's not an answer, but that will merely create the natural evolutionary tug of war that shapes and will shape everything, and with which you don't really need to concern yourself with, because that'd be like concerning yourself with whether or not our future is predetermined.

And no matter how many times you call me a fedora tipper, this isn't going to change, sorry.

Just look at Léon Walras, the most artistically Mathematical economist that ever lived.
