I found it pretty boring. Kind of relatable as an autist but I didn't really take much away from it besides that.

it's about alienation, tragedy and depression.
most people won't find it very appealing or interesting unless they've lived through the kind of experiences dazai talks about to at least a certain degree.

It's well written and kind of captures that state of mind pretty well desu

Its a short but poignant read, it was good. It's been a while since I read it though so I don't remember much. I liked bits with the thought experiment word association game he'd play with his friend.

waste of time. the book doesn't seem to progress anywhere beyond his being alienated for his whole life. its not even written in a particularly elegant or even smooth way. can often be clunky

jokes on you read it in japanese and english, both are shit. also in saying that its also worth taking into account how well written translations of don quixote can be.

>> No.10933671

I found it kind of unbearable. It's too much teenage angst.

if you read it during a dark period of your life, its great. otherwise, probably hard to like it.

I hate that you autists pretend to understand this book without having a basic grasp of Japanese polite society.

Heh, I've been watching anime for 13 years. I've literally finished over a thousand shows. I'd wager that I understand Japanese society better than the average Japanese person.

What did you think of the novel, the Tale of Genji?

>> No.10934942

I liked it a lot. It captures an immense amount of misery given its length.

Its particularly interesting when compared to western classics, which tend to focus on the pain of being human. For example Catcher in the Rye is stylistically and narratively very similar, but delivers the opposite message.

I'm sure many people will find No Longer Human even less relatable than Catcher in the Rye, but I've always thought that was a poor excuse for disliking a book. Whats the point of reading only perspectives you find comfortable?

A great book should force you to think in new ways.
