The Red Rising Saga
Is one of the best futuristic space tales I've ever red. Its got elements of age old Romanesque elitism. Genetic modifications separate people into color coded social groups. The main character was born a red (miner) on mars. Which is the lowest rung on the social ladder. Of course. And he ends up leading such a huge revolution that it nearly tears the solar system apart.

https://www.goodreads.com/series/117100-red-rising

"I live for the dream that my children will be born free," she says. "That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them."

"I live for you," I say sadly.

Eo kisses my cheek. "Then you must live for more."

This is a bit biased, but I like the Halo novels (Yes, the ones based off the games.) I enjoy the adventures and the unique situations characters are put in.

It helps if you've played the games, because they help with descriptions for specific aliens.

I'm not here to promote the company or anything, but I just really enjoy the Halo universe.

If you were to start, I'd recommend buying; The fall of Reach.

>> No.10696296

>>10693624
This, definitely.

>>10693434
Agreed. It was a great universe he set up, but the later books got trite and dull.

Greg Bear writes some broad, fantastic sci-fi! He wrote some of the Halo novels. But, his best work was Eon.

Theodore Sturgeon wrote some good, (though definitely dated) sci-fi. I'd check out "More than Human" and "To Marry Medusa" (a.k.a. "The Cosmic Rape")

Samuel R. Delany has a collection of short stories called "Driftglass". Some may not agree with his overall life outlook, but I really enjoy that each short story is very tragic on a personal level, while the overarching theme throughout is one of triumph.

Are there any classic science fiction, that could stand their own in the literary canon? Most SF I have read consist of a beginning, a muddle, and an end. I never read the book, but there not all sci-fi needs to be a hard sci-fi, that is, very focused on the possibility because it has a real and focused check on the science and it's theorys.
Hard sci-fi is very cool, but in my honest opinion, if it focus too much in the scientific aspect, it can fall short on the aesthetic one and/or the writting in itself, killing the flowness of the narrative.

Real talk:

There is no Lord of the Rings of science fiction. Just like there is no Lord of the Rings of non-sff fiction.

LotR's whole thing is that it has its own freakishly well-developed mythos, complete with languages, histories and so on. Anything that wants to be "Lord of the Rings" of something would have to be fantasy itself. Else, you're reduced to saying something is like Lord of the Rings because it was influential. But then what's the point using LotR for reference? You're more honest by asking the real question: "what is the most influential sci-fi novel?"

If that's what you're asking, I'd answer there is nothing in sci-fi as influential as LotR was in its genre.

>>10713638
>the growing up adventure
Well, at least that's one trope LotR avoids.. Frodo is like 50 years old when he leaves for his adventure.

It's a great little horror story. Sets up a premise and then it's rug-pulls all the way down. The sequels undermine the ambiguity so I wouldn't bother with them.

Pffft

For me it's probably Wolfe's Solar Cycle (Books of the New Sun, Long Sun & Short Sun)

HOWEVER

There are so many great stand-alones in sci-fi. That's one big difference between the two genres. The fantasy greats are often long trilogies or series of books, whereas many of the sci-fi greats aren't part of a series:

PKD's classics, Bester's "The Stars My Destination", Lindsay's "Voyage to Arcturus", Wells' classics, Gibson's "Neuromancer", Heinlein "Moon is a Harsh Mistress", Lem's "Solaris", Orwell and Huxley's dystopia classics...

If we look at sci-fi series, some of the big boys are:

Dune series
Wolfe's Solar Cycle
Asimov's Foundation books
Simmons' Hyperion series
Iain M. Banks' Culture series
Stephenson's wild rides... and so on

The original Dune is great, but the series as a whole is very patchy. Not exactly the best. Foundation series is a classic but I don't like it. Too sterile, bad prose, etc. Culture books are fun, often disgusting, and explore very interesting themes... but the whole post-scarcity utopia thing really stretches belief. Stephenson is an acquired taste, Wolfe as much as I love him is also polarising.

In conclusion I think the great sci-fi series tend to be weaker than the great stand alone novels

I experienced it as a lightweight though somewhat diffuse novel but was a bit put off by the technological ignorance of Gibson. He made up for it with ingenuity and his somewhat accurate futuristic predictions though. Are there even any Cyberpunk authors that depict an accurate view of technology as we know it? Considering it's prime were the 80s and most people didn't have much practical knowledge about computers back then.

Dune is being recommended over and over, as it should be. It's the kind of book that actually SHOULD be assigned reading in high school.

Also seeing lots of recommendations for Neuromancer and the rest of the Sprawl trilogy, but interestingly none for Gibson's Bridge trilogy. Virtual Light, Idoru, and All Tomorrow's Parties are some quality material, I feel like Gibson learned from some of the mistakes he made in the Sprawl books.
