10686435 No.10686435 [Reply] [Original]

Analogue to the murderous son Cain who committed an unspeakable crime in mythic times, or the wandering Jew. Deceived and used by the One Ring. Banished and cursed for all eternity. He is a phantom, a wronged man, a wretch most deserving of pity but because of his nature unlikely to ever receive it.

These tears we cry
Are falling rain
For all the lies you told us
The hurt, the blame...
And we will weep to be so alone
We are lost
We can never go home

it's a legendary figure, one Tolkien would have known.

I'm serious. Probably the only story that comes close in sadness units is the actual biblical story of the Fall. As the serpent seduced Eve, so the ring seduced Gollum to murder.

>> No.10686536

What makes the story more tragic is Man's punishment came from God. It is justice. Gollum's suffering was laid on him by Sauron.

Sauron isn't God he's a tall man with armor (/a ghost) who could transform into a bat at one point

Precisely. Sauron isn't God. Gollum's never-ending covetousness is not justice.

you're thinking of Melchor who could be categorized as a deity
but not Saurun he's a dude who Melchor made and gave magic powers

no, sauron was a maiar. a minor god.

he originally served aulë but later joined melkor. he was around since the beginning.

certainly less powerful than the valar (like melkor) but still, they're of the same stuff. sauron was pretty powerful. he was weaker by the time he created the one ring, but prior to that he managed to deceive the numenoreans (and ultimately ruin them) and celebrimbor.

sauron is the same species as gandalf and saruman, it's just that the valar handicapped the wizards and had them restrained to human form, and their magic was greatly restricted.

all the maiar are gods. the valar are just more powerful maiar who also have the title of valar. gandalf for example it totally immortal, created before time by eru (the valar did not create gandalf, they were created at the same time by the overgod), and would have had a hand in the creation of the world. his power is just diminished when he takes corporeal form and was also following rules put to him by the valar about using his power while in middle earth

sauron is the same and is not killed at the end of lotr since hes an immorality god, hes just very weak and i believe hes supposed to come back with melkor at the end of days
