Which language is harder: German or French?

For the life of me I can't master spoken French. The sheep amount of silent letters and words makes it so hard to understand. Is German much harder? Is grammar easier than French?

I'm not sure what's being implied here, here's my thoughts:
I. Language does not exist as text, French only exists as sounds, and even then the existence is a generalisation of millions of speakers. Point is learning to read isn't the same as learning to speak and hear.
II. You will get used to all the "extra letters" in French after learning how to speak, and it doesn't matter. Except less literate speakers will have a higher chance of spelling errors.

The spread of the English-speaking peoples over the world's waste spaces has been not only the most striking feature in the world's history, but also the event of all others most far reaching in its effects and its importance.

The tongue which Bacon feared to use in his writings, lest they should remain forever unknown to all but the inhabitants of a relatively unimportant insular kingdom, is now the speech of three continents. The Common Law which Coke jealously upheld in the southern half of a single European island, is now the law of the land throughout the vast regions of Australasia, and of America north of the Rio Grande. The names of the plays that Shakespeare wrote are household words in the mouths of mighty nations, whose wide domains were to him more unreal than the realm of Prester John. Over half the descendants of their fellow countrymen of that day now dwell in lands which, when these three Englishmen were born, held not a single white inhabitant; the race which, when they were in their prime, was hemmed in between the North and the Irish seas, to-day holds sway over worlds, whose endless coasts are washed by the waves of the three great oceans.

The most vague language in the world. Not even native speakers know what the fuck is going on 90% of the time. The break between the spoken language and the written language is immense. Most of daily use langauge consists of a handful of set phrases that are recycled into different sitautions. Most native Japan can barely read their own language, make constant grammaritical mistakes and have to back track while speaking, and have such extremely limited vocabularies that they don’t understand the most basic words taught in Japanese textbooks.

My favorite example is : nyuubai (the beginning of the rainy season)

Most Japanese have forgotten this simple word and instead speak like babies and say: Tsuyu no hajime toki (begin time of rainy season)

まぁーバカやろ。分かりますか

exp: I have spent most of my life in Japan as basically a non-native Native

Oh I'm sorry did the Germans magically all start speaking another language while I was gone? Did they all start learning a language that doesn't sound like a retarded pigfucker choking on horsecock while we were sleeping and spring it into action one day? How about a language that doesn't decide one day, "Hey, you know how sexing up every noun is stupid. Well, let's do this but make it even fucking stupider. And let's make the word for girl neuter because our entire nation is autistic"? Glad they finally decided that. Did they decide to fucking accept that more than 12 letters exist, so every word doesn't sound exactly the same, which is again like an elderly man choking to death on his own phlegm? Perhaps they adopted a language that didn't decide, "Wait, you know how fucking disgusting our language sounds. And I mean absolutely fucking disgusting, like to the point it actually, literally, unironically drives you to disgust when heard? Yeah, well let's put a bunch of stupid dots over our letters to make it even worse, because fuck other people." Did they create a language that only sounds right when screeched by an autistic manlet in front of thousands of other autistic manlets to say something completely moronic about how a nation of autistic manlets that have never won a war is somehow the master race? Did they invent a language that didn't stop inventing words at 1200 B.C., so now whenever they want to name something they throw 50 words from dinosaur times together just to name an emu?
No, they didn't do any of those things. Fuck off you stupid little fucker. French is better than German in literally, literally every single way.

I think a large part of the problem is that kanji are borrowed from Chinese. Most kanji have multiple readings that have to be memorized. The sound of the charachter changes depending on the word in which it is used. Also, in many cases, the kanji involved are not directly related to the meaning of the word. Basically, in the old days they may have had a spoken word that needed a “mi” sound but none of the “mi” kanji related to the meaning of the word so they just used whatever seemed most appropriate. The reverse is also true. Some words are basically collections of kanji that have the meaning so they added different readings for those characters. Some kanji will have a reading that only applies in one word that is very rarely used.

Another complication comes with katakana, the syllabary used with loan words. Firstly, the Japanese meaning of loan words is rarely the same as the meaning in the original language. Secondly, the loan words replaced the original Japanese words either because they were easier or because of the Japanese people’s constantly shifting idolization of different European cultures. People here often go to a baikingu (Viking) because the word smorgasbord would be insanely long in katakana. Either way it means buffett.

The people who have the highest technical ability with Japanese, especially in regard to Kanji usage, seem to be second generation Chinese and Taiwanese or foreigners from western countries with an obsession with learning kanji.

I see what is meant when Japanese say that a native Japanese doesn't understand the language in the same way if he or she doesn't grow up there. Because this
>Not even native speakers know what the fuck is going on 90% of the time
is just outright wrong. Do you not wonder why native speakers don't stop to ask each other to repeat what they've said all the time, and can actually carry a conversation like a non-retard? I love how your response is basically
>Is it my lack of ability to interpret context or use appropriate language that's the issue?
>No, it's the language and the native speakers who are wrong.
And then you pick a word you know is outdated (and has a simpler form anyway which you conveniently ignored) and wonder why Japanese don't use it anymore. It's because they know other people don't use it anymore, like a million other words in every language so they use clear and simple language which will be understood, and they save the rest of that shit for books.
Get good retard.

English has had a massive impact. Borrowed words in common use everywhere especially with technology. I think the occupation was the seed but the main factor would be the fetishization of American culture. I would even say that American literature played a massive role in the past since many of the more popular Japanese authors created their styles after being exposed to Faulkner, Hemmingway, etc... In more recent time it would be the influence of music, movies, and sports.

On a side note, German and Dutch figure heavily into medical terminology.

A lot of people seem to bash their native languages but I think finnish is a top-tier language. The conjugations and free order of words make a lot of flexibility and fun detail. Also pronounciation is 100% consistant.

that's what I like about polish too (it's amazing how many words you can form from a single word comapared to english), but I have to admit russian is softer and more melodic

German grammar can be pretty difficult for English speakers
English speakers seem to have an easy time adjusting to the complex verb conjugations of French or Spanish but they really don't like the case systems of German, Icelandic, Slavic languages, etc.

I'm an American who took 4 years of German, there was more grammar than in English but it wasn't really all that confusing, the only thing that occassionally tripped me up was passive voice and Konjunktiv, like worde and all that, but most Germans don't even bother with the Konjunktiv I or II anyway.
That wasn't really my point, anyway: the category for II is called "languages closely related to English" and puts the Romance languages all ahead of German and equal to the Nordic languages, which I think is ridiculous.
Someone post the pie chart of English vocab, as if that is the sole factor that makes English a Romance language. Most of the English words used in everyday conversation is Germanic, and our phonemes and grammar are much closer to German than French.

>> No.10679089

English is a Germanic language with Romance influence, not the other way around
the idea that English is a "hybrid language" or straight up Romance is a misconception

but the map is based on objective data, ie. how long it takes the US foreign department to get diplomats to an acceptable level in a language and all the data seems to indicate that German is more difficult for English speakers than the more distantly related Romance languages and the no. 1 reason cited for that is the case system of German

>> No.10679167

>>10679060
>there was more grammar than in English
This isn't really true, it's just that different languages have different ways of expressing how nouns interact with each other. Languages like German and several other conservative Germanic languages still use a case system to show these relations. English, by comparison, is more stringent about word order because that's how noun relationships are shown in said language.

And German's relationship to English is there, but it's not as strong as other languages. The Romance Languages are often compared to English because they share a large portion of lexicon, even if they're not grammatically similar. The Nordic Languages are both
lexically and grammatically similar to English.

all brilliant, Pushkin is a better poet than anything Spanish ever produced (or English, for that matter) and Gogol isn't far behind him in talent. Russian tradition is undeniably superior to the Spanish one. and as a novelist I'd take Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Turgenev over basically any Spanish writer you'd care to mention. and of course Borges is an ersatz Nabokov--even early, unrefined, in Russian.
