How are these usually written?
Are they directly addressing the reader, trying to convince him like in an essay or is it a presentation of the ideology's ideas?

The few parts of the unabomber manifesto I've read have been accurate enough that I can't help but think he could have made a change if he didn't decide to kill a bunch of people

Recently, on wikipedia, I've massively updated all related articles and materials on a recent notable anarchist manifesto. Guess which one.

I haven't read a good "manifesto", ever.

as in you never agreed with the ideas presented?

I don't really care but he's most likely referring to prose and literary style of manifestos as opposed to the merit or truth of the ideas that they present. Manifestos tend to follow a predictable program in which they sketch out the current problems with the art establishment/society in general/etc and then propose to remedy these ills via some sort of a justifiable and radical break, whatever that may be. And so manifestos can get a bit turgid as they are obliged to get down to cases.

The Declaration of Independence can be construed as a manifesto. Try reading its middle third sometime and you'll see what I mean.

He didn't want it to be called a manifesto, because it has a negative connotation

Yes, he could have done some good work educating people, but he decided to kill merely for revenge...

It's sad that the writers at the CIA don't get to take proper credit.
If you're reading my keystrokes guys, you did a great job with this one.

Unabomber had some good points imo. He's just butthurt a his favorite hiking trail was 'ruined' by an industrial company.

A manifesto is a statement of an ideal, usually in response to something that is wrong. It is a persuasive essay that is larger in format than a standard essay. EG modern manifestos like the one my Michael Pollan argue for the change in diet.

I read this interview with a black dude who was in the same max security prison as the unabomber and he said when he met the unabomber that the dude immediately wanted to give him (the black dude) an IQ test to see if he was worth having a conversation with...

>Did you ever run into any of the well-known terrorists and other criminals who are at the ADX?

>Well, I never got sent to the control unit, where they keep the “worst” of them. But I did meet Ted Kaczynski, the “Unabomber,” on the range [i.e. he was on the same cell block]. He was just a fucking weird little guy — he wouldn’t even go outside when he was allowed to. I didn’t like him because I knew about his crime and that crime was a weird thing to do, but I guess I respected him because he was older. So I called him “Mr.” and I think he really liked that. He ended up giving me an IQ test, because to him, intelligence was everything.

How does one go about gathering the materials for an IQ test in a supermax prison, let alone actually administering it? This guy is saying he was kept in solitary for 22-23 hours a day. I wonder if he's lying. Or maybe Ted just thought he could determine the guy's IQ from a couple of questions during their one hour of free time in a rec cage. I notice he doesn't mention the result Ted gave him.

You should wonder if any of them are there at all.
