You're not giving OP enough credit (sympathy?). Book recommendations are extraordinarily intimate things. If you stop to think about all the implications of giving a book to another person, particularly one you should already be close to, the prospect of giving a recommendation is pants-shittingly terrifying.

You cross-reference what you like, and what they like and you pick a book.
