Wacky structure aside, is this a good book?

It's probably the most "okay" book I've ever read.

Overall, really. The story is interesting, but the structural games Danielewski plays detracts from the experience IMO, which entirely defeats the purpose of reading the book. In other words, he set out to do something unique and failed, but the story is still worth reading. I just wish he had stuck to conventional norms in executing it.

I mean I'd argue its a good entry to PoMo literature for teenagers or genre trash readers. It communicates the ideas of themes, that structure of a work is important, and just generally carries the message that there's more to a work than just the narrative it's telling.

It's not groundbreaking work and at times it gets incredibly obvious with its meaning, but that's approaching it from the perspective of someone well read.

I think Danielewski is great as a gateway to other forms of higher literature, it's just important to not stop on him. He does interesting stuff within his own niche of how he plays with the structure/typeset of a book, but outside of that he's no real canon-worthy writer.

>he set out to do something unique and failed
do you think the book would be as popular as it is had he not done the gimmicks

The main character was also really unlikable to me. It's like he modeled him after the avg /lit/ poster

Is it hard to read? I mean, does it have a big vocabulary or large and confusing sentences? I'm thinking of buying that book, it's truly a piece of art for what I read.
