I am currently writing a non fiction story based on real events.Had a few questions if anyone of you know the answer to them.

1. Do names of real people need to be changed?
2. Do these people need to know they are being written about?
3. How accurate or true does the story have to be? Im not talking about a million little pieces here but I imagine there must be some leniency for the sake of storytelling

If you publish falsehoods about real people they can sue you for libel unless you heavily disclaimer everything (i.e. "alleged").
If you are going to take creative license with the narrative just change all of the people and place names.

Just change the names and the other questions are nullified. Easy.

>change names
Got it. Can you still state the book is based on real events though?

Change the names and the other two questions stop being issues. Just do the lazy thing and make them vaguely similar names so you can keep track of the characters as easily as you would the original people

I am pretty sure there are little to no requirements for putting that as a selling point, even if it isn't based on anything
