Honestly OP, if you manage to get even an average comprehension of these works, you're more than equiped to go into the arena and play with the pseuds.

You didn't enjoy The Brothers Karamazov?

The republic was ok but tbk was a rambling half assed plot that goes nowhere with half assed references to high minded topics. It is really unbelievable how awful it was and how it is talked about as some profound work. It will always stay in my mind as the epitome of the pseuds making lots of unfalsifiable extrapolations about a boring old book as a way to claim it is profound and insightful

I have never seen a good rebuttal. Only soyboy tier replies from people who think continental philosophy is worthwhile

I'm in a similar boat. I just have some Tolstoy to get under my belt until I can get my pseud cred and go back to 1 short story per day. This year I read:
>Read Ulysses in Jan/Feb this year after listening to all Re: Joyce podcasts, Odyssey, Hamlet, Portrait and Dubliners in Q4 2016. I was still pretty lost, but I loved the prose. Joyce is legit my favorite author.
>Crime & Punishment, but with no research, so I missed a lot of the philosophical points. Still great, loved Dostoevsky's storytelling, I felt a stronger sense of empathy
>In Search of Lost Time, read the first 3 very closely then kinda skimmed the last few. Honestly it was the same shit for 7 books, and while I loved it, I was just tired of it. Will likely return to it but not feeling pressured to do so.
>Chekhov's Forty Stories, read most of them, phenomenal, just really enjoyable reading.
>The Brothers Karamazov, with secondary lit and analyses for each chapter as I read. Life changing, almost believe in god.

You don't seem to know how to read if this is where your concerns truly are.

SparkNotes for very basic analyses, a book called "Fedor Dostoevsky" from my local pubic library, and one-off articles of things i googled. also researching Zosima's concept of "active love" was helpful, i try to practice active love every day
