how hard is learning greek from scratch? Feels bad to read Homer in translation

Pretty difficult considering there is no word order. The alphabet is easier than one might think, though.

Well I know the alphabet from maths. Is learning modern greek with duolingo a good start?

You’re doing well but reading more short fiction is the patrician path.

Modern Greek has many differences with its Ancient counterpart vocabulary wise, so it might confuse you rather than help you.

No. That's like learning English to read Beowulf or learning Italian to read Virgil. Instead, study Mastronarde's textbook on Attic Greek, however, if you just want to read Homer, then work through Clyde Pharr's textbook on Homeric Greek.

The perk of learning Attic Greek, however, is the ability to get access to a greater quantity of texts such as Plato, Aristotle, the playwrights, and the historians of Athens. From Attic Greek, it's pretty easy to work back to Homeric Greek or forward to the Koine Greek of the Bible and Plutarch. Traditionally classics students start with Classical Latin and then study Attic Greek. From there, they pursue any further interests they have whether it be medieval Latin for the early Church Fathers or something more obscure such as Aeolic Greek for Sappho. But Classical Latin and Attic Greek alone offer a vast quantity of literature.

You determine the subject and object by the article, not by the order the words come in.
