If Dante is such a devout christian, why does he constantly use characters from myths and imply the legitimacy of ancient pantheons

"Ephiates is his name; the great attempt
He made, when giants frightened the gods"
(inferno XXXI 94-95)

what gods, dante? what fucking gods are you on about?

Why wouldn't he? Aquinas used Aristotle for his autistic ramblings. Medieval intellectuals knew very well that they were midgets sitting on the shoulders of giants.

The pagan gods (or, rather, idols) were angels, demons, men, or personifications of animals, places, ideas, or natural phenomenon, or composites of the above. The Medievals were well aware that there is only one God, but could still speak of the pagan gods without getting autistic. They were will aware that all creatures and creations worshiped as gods were idols whether they were real or not or some combination of real and unreal. Leave it to modernists to sperg out over this when they don't even believe in the one true God in the first place.
