Rephrased questions about The Fifth Head of Cerberus from last thread.

Why did the abos need trees to reproduce? Is it because the parasite made them infertile? How do the trees solve that?

Also, why didn't it just infect everyone from the get go, why ever let the abos live alongside the infected shadow children? Is it because they become infertile once infected and thus can't reproduce to make new hosts? Also why didn't it infect more humans beside Marsch?

I don't understand this question. If you don't have a story to tell why would you write a novel? The whole impetus to writing a novel is so you have a way to tell the story you have. Translating the story in your head into a novel format is an arduous process, but the urge, the impetus to do it has to be very strong or else why would you do it? Writing a novel is a horrible experience like taking a massive butthole-tearing shit over a period of several weeks if not months. But it's all to get those amazing ideas in your head into a form other people can experience and enjoy.

9698214

5/5 for mindfuckery and it's an excellently written book. PKD's writing style is very modern and there are some truly fucking hilarious moments like:

>"I'll sue you," the door said as the first screw fell out. Joe Chip said, "I've never been sued by a door. But I guess I can live through it.”

There are strains of Fforde's Shades of Grey in this. In fact I think Fforde borrowed some of the things from his novel from Ubik like the little epigraphs - sometimes humorous - at the start of each chapter but when it gets frightening and mindbending it certainly does.

Another person who borrows quite strongly from PKD's Ubik seems to be Doctor Who's Steven Moffat especially the world created from an individual's mind and certain grotesque 'space saving measures' are employed to sustain the world -
in fact the Library two parter seems to be a direct ripoff
.

It's much better than the Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and there are nice little nods to other works of literature that really add to the atmosphere, although definitely nowhere near as many as Palmer's Too Like the Lightning.

Ultimately my thoughts about the end of the novel.
Fucking Pat threw me. I was certain that she was the ultimate antagonist from the moment that she was classed as dangerous by Joe even though he couldn't exactly figure out why but it ended up as Jory. I thought that Jory was just a misunderstood kid. I also believed that Joe created/is Ubik. The reason why I believe this is Runciter apparently helps Joe and so does Ella but since Ubik is self creating and Ella appears to be in a fading state at the start of the novel I strongly believe that Joe created Ubik by himself and that the appearance of these two characters is mostly bleed through in his mind. This is reflected at the end when Joe's features appear on the coin - Ubik to allow Ella and Runciter to communicate and Ubik which created itself. Also at the end of the novel I get the feeling that Joe is the ultimate villain. Jory might have killed but the Ubik snippets make Ubik feel like the true villain. Ubik invades the lives of the characters in this novel through those snippets and throughout the book Joe's life and the life of all his associates is dictated almost entirely by money, at the end of the book his appearance on the coin seems to symbolise his takeover of the system - a cold premonition. Perhaps Runciter is dead but I find it a much more unlikely and boring twist.

I'm going to spoiler this stuff just in case anybody wants to read it.

Abos don't NEED trees to reproduce. Remember, almost the entire planet is abos who don't know they're abos now. They're reproducing without trees as far as we know. I think that the implication is that old abos eventually BECOME trees. Recall the constant references to the state of everybody's legs. Everyone on St Anne (I think that's the one) has legs that eventually go bad, and it seems to affect women more strongly. After giving birth Sandwalker and Eastwind's mother covers her legs with earth in order to regain her strength. I think that there's enough information scattered around to infer that many of the trees of St Anne and Croix are elder abos, only as the humans came and their culture (but not their genetics) became dominant, they all forgot this. Hence, everyone's legs go bad in old age because they forgot that they used to bury their legs in soil and become trees. I don't think that they needed the trees, it's just their life-cycle, changed from the normal human one by living in an alien environment.

As for why it didn't infect everyone No idea on whether the Shadow Children reproduce among themselves or if new abos are just constantly being infected. Pretty sure VRT mentions that his mother told him to avoid certain areas due to the parasites. It seems as though the abos were aware of them and took steps to avoid infection, limiting their spread. And it may well infect more 'humans' than Marsch. It's mentioned that the slaves who work with the parasite's silk tend to have short lifespans. This is most likely on account of the parasite trying to change them but their masters not allowing them to move to an environment which suits Shadow Children, which is reinforced by Marsch's fate. I believe that Marsch is soon to die at the end of the story and that the purpose behind mentioning these slaves is to tell us this. The story is all about the abos' worlds becoming hellish because they don't understand their own nature, so this fits that. Might want to bring this up to Aramini to be sure though.

Now that I'm older I understand why dbz was such a huge hit. It had people turning into blonde hair, blue eyed beings who were the strongest in the universe. Same shit with naruto. He is blonde and important, so 'those' people can associate with him. This general makes it even clearer that people watch/read things for self-insertment, not for entertainment value. That is why those people cry about certain books, because a character description shows that they are black / tan brown/ w/e, they not pasty white. They cry about PC. I couldn't have said it better myself. The discussions of Fifth Head (see reddit Gene Wolfe, for example) usually ignore all of the progress I made in making sense of the story, and they flounder around with small micro-theories that never really encapsulate the bigger picture. The spider plant cringed as its owner brought forth the watering can. "I am a spider plant!" it cried indignantly. "How dare you water me before my time! Guards!" it called. "Guards!"

Borin, its owner, placed the watering can on the table and looked at it. "You will be watered," he said.

"You do not dare to water me!" laughed the plant.

"You will be watered," said Borin.

"Do not water me!" wept the plant.

"You will be watered," said Borin.

I watched this exchange. Truly, I believed the plant would be watered. It was plant, and on Gor it had no rights. Perhaps on Earth, in its permissive society, which distorts the true roles of all beings, which forces both plant and waterer to go unh appy and constrained, which forbids the fulfillment of owner and houseplant, such might not happen. Perhaps there, it would not be watered. But it was on Gor now, and would undoubtedly feel its true place, that of houseplant. It was plant. It would be watered at will. Such is the way with plants.

Borin picked up the watering can, and muchly watered the plant. The plant cried out. "No, Master! Do not water me!" The master continued to water the plant. "Please, Master," begged the plant, "do not water me!" The master continued to water the plant. It was plant. It could be watered at will.

The plant sobbed muchly as Borin laid down the watering can. It was not pleased. Too, it was wet. But this did not matter. It was plant.

"You have been well watered," said Borin.

"Yes," said the plant, "I have been well watered." Of course, it could be watered by its master at will.

"I have watered you well," said Borin.

"Yes, master," said the plant. "You have watered your plant well. I am plant, and as such I should be watered by my master."

The cactus plant next to the spider plant shuddered. It attempted to cover its small form with its small arms and small needles. "I am plant," it said wonderingly. "I am of Earth, but for the first time, I feel myself truly plantlike. On Earth, I w as able to control my watering. I often scorned those who would water me. But they were weak, and did not see my scorn for what it was, the weak attempt of a small plant to protect itself. Not one of the weak Earth waterers would dare to water a plant if it did not wish it. But on Gor," it shuddered, "on Gor it is different. Here, those who wish to water will water their plants as they wish. But strangely, I feel myself most plantlike when I am at the mercy of a strong Gorean master, who may water m e as he pleases."

"I will now water you," said Borin, the cactus's Gorean master.

The cactus did not resist being watered. Perhaps it was realizing that such watering was its master's to control. Too, perhaps it knew that this master was far superior to those of Earth, who would not water it if it did not wish to be watered.

There's more than one guy rating books here, and not all of us have read Ada Palmer. Is she any good? Anyway, I did look at Ubik a couple of months ago and while I enjoyed it, I thought it was flawed. There are too many needless characters, and the plotting and pacing is uneven. I wasn't surprised to hear that PKD wrote it without outlining it. He literally wrote this book while sitting at a typewriter, typing whatever occurred to him, so the book is more a product of his subconscious mind than a conventionally crafted novel. In novelistic terms, however, it didn't satisfy me. He has better books from this time: Martian Time-Slip, Dr Bloodmoney, and DADOES.

Too Like the Lightning is a decent science fiction book, but it's strength is more in its literary merit and cast-building than anything else. For bog-standard genre-fiction reads Lightning comes across as revolutionary, but if you've read any real literature it's not as golden as it seems.
Haven't said that, it's beautiful written and certainly worth checking out, but actual science-fiction takes more of a backseat to the plot.
Also it's really science fantasy.

>Replace plant with woman and water with something else

The nubile tanned woman cringed as her owner brought forth an erect penis. "I am a nubile woman!" She cried indignantly. "How dare you sex me before my time! Guards!" She called. "Guards!"

Borin, her owner, placed one hand on his penis, and the other on the table and looked at her. "You will be fucked" he said.

"You do not dare to sex me!" laughed the woman, her oiled tan lines gleaming in the low light.

"You will be fucked," said Borin.

"Do not sex me!" wept the plant.

I watched this exchange. Truly, I believed the woman would be fucked. She was a woman, and on Gor she had no rights. Perhaps on Earth, in its permissive society, which distorts the true roles of all beings, which forces both woman and owner to go unhappy and constrained, which forbids the fulfillment of owner and woman, such might not happen. The supple female sobbed muchly as Borin extracted his penis. It was not pleased. Too, it was wet and sore. But this did not matter. It was female.

"You have been well fucked," said Borin.

"I have fucked you well," said Borin.

"Yes, master," said the female. "You have fucked your woman well. I am female, and as such I should be fucked by my master."

The older woman next to the nubile supple tanned woman shuddered. She attempted to cover her small form with her small frail arms and small hands. "I am female," she said wonderingly. "I am of Earth, but for the first time, I feel myself truly womanlike. On Earth, I was able to control my fucking. I often scorned those who would fuck me. But they were weak, and did not see my scorn for what it was, the weak attempt of a small older woman to protect herself. "I will now fuck you," said Borin, the older woman's Gorean master.

The mature beauty did not resist being fucked. Perhaps she was realizing that such fucking was its master's to control. Too, perhaps she knew that this master was far superior to those of Earth, who would not fuck her if she did not wish to be fucked.

I dunno, launching all the world's nuclear ICBMs into space to power a nuclear pulse propulsion device to 0.01c was pretty UN-ey

>Plus I thought the end of Death's End was a little weak, but I guess it couldn't really go anywhere else
From a strictly plot perspective it was kind of weak, but from a thematic perspective it worked perfectly. Throughout the whole book we have it hammered into our heads over and over again that Cheng Xin's compassion is a weakness, that her moral outlook has repeatedly led directly to outcomes directly detrimental to the human race's survival, and that the hardened ruthlessness of Thomas Wade or Luo Ji is the best way forward when dealing with the equally ruthless Trisolarans and the rest of civilization in the universe, whose collective ruthlessness has created the dark forest.
But what the ending does is zoom out and put that into perspective. We see that although this behavior is needed to give your civilization a chance of survival, the that everyone is treating the universe as this giant zero sum game is what is causing the whole universe to collapse and die. At the very end of it all it turns out that the only hope the universe has left for any kind of survival is if enough people, without any way to communicate with each other, can find in themselves the kind of selflessness and compassion that Cheng Xin has shown throughout the story. Though Wade and Luo Ji's way can allow short term gain, in the long run for the collective it is Cheng Xin who is correct.

Well, here is Sailing To Byzantium by Robert Silverberg, the Nebula winner for best novella in 1986. Its setting is Earth during the 50thC century, a world of abundance and creativity, composed of a revolving selection of five cities recreated from famous epochs of mythology and history: Alexandria, Timbuctoo, Mohenjo-daro, Asgard, Changan, etc. The novel's protagonist is a man from the twentieth century who tours these cities along with an exotic woman companion. The narrative depicts the fracturing of their relationship, and the discovery of their own nature. This is a picturesque novel of particular interest to history fans which talks about the nature of existence and mortality. This is a highly rated story, and aesthetically I can see it's well written, with pleasingly flowing and visual prose. However, there is little narrative thrust and I felt little interest in fate of its characters. So this one gets 3/5 from me, something I put down to a matter of personal taste. I've enjoyed other of his works much more.

Dislikeable characters and antiheroes can be very interesting: Ben Reich, Cugel, Jaime Lannister. However, I appreciate some works aren't designed to have dramatic clashes of personality, sparkling dialogues, or engrossing character development. Sailing To Byzantium is clearly all about the prose and the setting.

Jack Vance is one of the few writers I have encountered who can do it all; plot, character, and setting.

Are there any fantasy universes that can sustain my new appetite? After reading/playing the last four Elder Scrolls games along with their two novelizations as well as all the in-game books, I have a hollow feeling whenever I try and "get into" a new fantasy world, because the level of detail and history and world building to me seems inadequate in comparison. Am I just a spoiled brat, or does /sffg/ know the perfect series for me?

The Elder Scrolls lore is anything but generic. Sure, on surface it's just another high-fantasy Tolkien derivative, but once you dive into Dragon Breaks and CHIM it gets pretty unique. This integration of gameplay and lore into a cohesive ludonarrative is the reason why Morrowind is one of the titles that could be treated as examples of games as art.

Lets be fair here anon, Faile's never ending kidnapped and stockholm syndrome was the absolute worst part of the series.

It took like 5 books and LITERALLY had zero point. The only thing that mattered from that whole event was Perrin meeting that Seanchan chick which was also kind of unimportant.

Just finished reading this
Kellhus killed my enjoyment of the book
Bigger Gary Stu than Kwothe and every character POV somehow reaches around to suck his dick
Does book 3 get better or is it just another 1000 pages of Kellhus masturbation with the occasional rape demons?

Okay, fuck it, I'm going to elaborate because I had the same problem with Bakker's series that you did. Couldn't stand Kellhus because of much everyone sucked him off 24/7, but I powered through until book three where it becomes apparent what the author had in mind. Now, it's one of my favorite series, and I meme with the rest of /sffg/. So let me try to convince you.

One of the premises of the series is "Hey, what if we took the cliche superhuman Gary Stu (like Kvothe), who fucks over everyone and is great at everything and gets what he wants and makes everyone love him and is so fucking cool and awesome, and played it completely straight? How the fuck would that work?"

So you get Kellhus. A fucking superhuman Bene Gesserit ubermensch and the first character the book focuses on. We know fuck all about him. He does some weird shit in the beginning, but we don't really have much of a feel for him yet until he does his first bad thing: he abandons the trapper that saved his life to be literally raped to death by not-orcs. Most readers forget about this, but it's the first clue that something isn't exactly human about this guy. He's not the hero. He's the main character, but he is by no means the hero.

>I hate Kellhus! Why does everyone love him so much?! He's such a dick!

You're not alone. The protagonist of the series is arguably Achamian, a tubby beta with very human flaws. He meets Kellhus, falls in love with him, thinks he's super cool, then gradually learns the horrifying truth, as will many other characters in the series.

Anyway, you can stop if you want. I'm just saying that I had the exact problem you did, but I'm glad I picked it back up. Book two can be a slog because it's more like a bridge between the interesting setup of book one and the payoff of book three. But the payoff in book three is nothing compared to the utter insanity of books four to six. Just grimdark balls-to-the-wall crazy shit happening every chapter, leaving you exhausted and spent like the aftermath of a brutal assrape, and the Unholy Consult looks like it's going to be the moneyshot.

Do people really not get this? I only read the introduction part a week or so ago and found all of this blindingly obvious. Kellmeme is a hero, but in the classical sense, that is, a complete monster who's only virtue is power granted to him arbitrarily by some higher power. Knowing that the whole story develops along these lines almost makes me want to keep reading. The length is a bit off-putting though.

The Trapper sequence couldn't really have made it more obvious that he's not meant to strike the reader as good or relatable. He's so sharp that his perception of the world is inhuman and his systematic method of interacting with others would be considered straight sociopathy if he weren't so far beyond regular classification.
