Where does one begin with Kierkegaard? I never allotted him much thought before, understanding him to be a religious writer, but I recently stumbled upon a page of his quotes and suspect his is a true artistry. There's a real poetry to his paradoxes and I look forward to better knowing them. Also, is there a de facto translation I should pursue?

I can't guarantee that this is good advice because I haven't followed it myself.

PUA?

I think you're supposed to start with Either/Or. He wrote all his books to be read in a specific order, I think.

remember the concept of pseudonyms, it's a big deal in his work. don't uncritically think that whatever he's saying in a certain passage is what he actually believes

What's Updike?

None of the pseudonyms are to be read as expressions of 'what Kierkegaard really thinks'. They express different ways to relate to existence in modernity (aesthetically, ethically, religiously etc.). Very important to remember.

If you want the 'real' thoughts of the Kierk, then reads his 'Opbyggelige Taler'.

First of all, learn Danish

But here is a guide:

start exploring the different 'existences' in his work:
The Aesthetic = The 'Either' part of Either/Or
The Ethic = The 'Or' part of Either/Or
The Religious = Fear and Trembling

Then look at some of the stuff not written under a pseudonym. 'Acts of Love' is one of my personal favorites. From there you can dive in and go nuts.
