If I write a fanfic novel about adventures in the zone and just call it something generic like "The Zone" can I publish it and make money?

Keep in mind the word "Stalker" comes from the 1979 film.

Roadside Picnic mentioned the word "Stalker" in the same context as the film years before.

But yes, you're probably right, there's a big interest in YA fiction and online fanfic being post-apocalyptic.

Just change everything up slightly to avoid copyright problems

Probably.

But you're not motivated enough to do this so does it really matter?

you can just set it in Ukraine, it's pretty much a post-apoc dystopia by now

Stalker wasn't really set anywhere specific other than "The Zone".

Filmed in Estonia though.

there are significant differences in their mythology, setting (nature vs post apoc), and tone.
