Are we approaching the age when we'll be speaking exclusively through dank maymays?

There's nothing to be proud of when what you do becomes a synonym for fallacies and tricks three thousand years later.

It seems so.
Actually, I feel like I can use them without being consumed by them. Crack a joke with it, but then move on by stating my point.
But most of my feed nowadays is filled with dumbshits who voice their 'self-evident' political stance through some shitty maymay.

I think we are entering a new form of an illiterate society.

That's essentially impossible. Memes are the new dialectic of alienated man. What could possibly be a more fitting language for a society that mediates solely on empty appearances than empty inside jokes? They mean nothing more than some basal understanding of being in on the joke. The future of language is the self-satisfying appropriation of irony into actual sincerity.

Call it what you want, it's not literate in the traditional sense. Memes are visual imagery with not even a paragraph of text.
It fits the 140-character attention span of people.

I agree. I wasn't saying it's a positive thing, it's possibly the most negative outcome for language that could possibly happen, and not out of some reactionary values to how popular it is, but because memes are the culmination of insincerity in language. They allow you to hold a full conversation in which the other person can just as well not exist, and in which nothing at all can be said.

Sophists were basically the self-help gurus and pick up artists of antiquity.

I think they have some merit in how they realized the psychology of manipulation.

I mean Socrates says he won't use any sophism in his appeal, and he gets ordered to drink the hemlock. Sounds like he could have used a hand from those guys after all.
