Penguin Classics don't always have crappy covers (Penguin Classics are the black ones). I think what you mean is the Penguin Modern Classics, but I gotta be a bit contrarian here and say that I don't mind them really. The only one I've not liked/appreciated is the Lolita still life cover the other anon posted.

They're rarely brilliant covers, of course, but I don't find them particularly dreadful. I like this one.
