Is that really all you want? What country do you live in? In most parts of the world you can find somewhere with very cheap rent then get a room or even a damn trailer. You can live on like $150 a week pretty easily. If you live in Europe go to somewhere like Portugal.

There are a million ways to get such a small amount of money a week. You'd probably only need to work one or two days a week and books cost very little.

This is exactly what I do. It's great for getting reading done, but pretty much nobody will respect your lifestyle regardless of how difficult/obscure your books are. Also you will never get laid; I don't even talk to girls anymore because they are without exception filled by contempt for someone without a career path, especially if you still live with your parents.

If you live with your parents, you pretty much have to trade the chance of sex for the opportunity to read all day. I was always shit with girls anyway, so I just read like 9-10 hours a day, work out, and sleep. If I'm not gonna get laid I may as well read some cool books to pass the time.

Save really hard for 10 years, and then buy a small shack in the western US near a source of clean water and fish, grow your own food, live off the land, and read. A good library nearby probably would be helpful.

Pic related, Ted Kaczynski did it no problem. You could probably do better, not being insane. I felt he kept a very cluttered space.

That's not really in the cards; my family has a decent bit of money, and fairly hefty life insurance policies on both of my parents. Worst comes to worst, I have a useful degree from a good school, and have received (and turned down) good job offers from connections through a few of my old professors. High pay, long hours; it's a nice fallback, but I have no desire to work 80 hours a week at a consulting firm just to put money in the bank.

>>7339624
Yeah I get that a lot. It kind of bums me out, but ultimately makes sense and IMO isn't worth totally overhauling my whole life for the sake of MAYBE fucking/dating a girl. I get flirted with/approached decently often, but the conversation inevitably collapses when it comes out that I "don't do anything." It's funny that it's not even an issue of lifestyle compatibility; even girls still in school are turned off by it.

You're still young, and most people who go to university live with their parents after graduation until they land a decent job. You're saying you don't want to gain experience in the field you studied, which makes me think you don't enjoy what you studied. Clearly if you were offered jobs by your professors and other connections, you must have some people skills. Support yourself, don't be a burden and eventually an embarrassment to your parents, all for the purpose to spend your days reading. Stop being a loser and do something with your life. Even if you are working a job, and living on your own, you can still make time to read.

I enjoyed what I studied; I just don't enjoy working in the field more than I do reading and, frankly, just enjoying all of my free time.

I also don't get this whole "support yourself" schtick; you're attaching worth to work, and for only that reason are recommending that I give myself less time to do what I enjoy. Could I "make time" to read? Yeah. But I couldn't read as much as I wanted to, nor would I have the energy for it. And for what? A paycheck? The irony is that people don't actually care about money; they are obsessed with the worth they attach to earning it. It baffles me that you can look at someone who has money and no obligations, and recommend to them that they get a job just to get a job.

You may live to work, but I'll only ever work to live; if I can live without working, I won't work.

I guess being a critic for your local newspapers would help as a start. Write reviews for recently written books/films/albums, etc, and maybe write short stories/novels at the same time. It's not going to rake in a lot but if you're genuinely up for it and enthusiastic, it'd likely open up some more doors to make more cash in the long run.

I just think it's funny that you totally fail to see how intensely you're projecting your own values onto me. You equate ambition with career ambition; I don't. You praise the balance of work and pleasure that makes you happy; so have I, with different results. You say I'm afraid of trying anything in life, as though life is wholly described by professional success, as though disinterest in a 9-5 means I fear life and have no interests or desires.

>unaware that different people have different preferences

Maybe your "furthered education" should at some point include the most basic of micro economics classes, so you can appreciate that not everyone thinks and lives exactly as you do. All of your arguments (ambition, wasting life, educating oneself) are based on totally subjective preferences; you just sound butthurt that someone else's preferences don't involve sitting in an office for 50 hours a week.
