What does /lit/ think of Alain de Botton and his School of Life?

Philosophical equivalent to Krauss or Hawkings (nowadays).
All of them the academic equivalents of the Kardashians.

>> No.7272910

Maybe he should send his hair to the School of Life so it would stop dying

turned it off less than a minute in, saying that condemning buzzfeedesque celebrity culture is wrong because if you repress admiring people you'll end up admiring the wrong people. Are you serious?

Seems like a douche trying to be contrarian while having no actual contrarian points to argue for. Very few people if any will argue against looking up to geniuses or heroes

But that's just less that a minute in, maybe I'm wrong. I think not

Don't worry, it was complete garbage

they aren't bad but I've noticed a bunch of bias in it. A quick read of a philosopher on plato.stanford.edu is a lot better intro to philsophy.

I have seen this thread once before.

I used to like their videos before getting/ when trying to get into philosophy. NowI think they're dull and simplified to a point some key concepts get distorted. I also bought this guys book 'Religion for atheists' a while back and couldnt get past the first few pages.

I'm pretty certain he has a deeper, richer understanding of philosophy than 99.9% of users here but he's deemed an SJW because he sees philosophy as useful to everybody and thus is anti-muh secret club and insufficiently edgy and thus bad

I agree. And this is the board that extols stoicism and Meditations while whining about Botton being self-help shit.

This.
I saw a snippet of an interview where he explained his approach as being similar to the catholic church's; bringing the complexity of theology down to a level that a rube-ish medieval peasant could understand. Most people will never give a flipping fuck about philosophy and furthermore most people's understanding of the world will probably never go beyond about a 10 minute youtube video's worth of depth. Would you rather have people watching stuff about the Kardashians or gleaning well-curated nuggets from philosophy?

How can someone consider Heidegger harder to understand than Hegel?
