could you make a list of books and films, say, an anglo expat should get acquainted to so that you don't consider him a bydloid britbong anymore? (for anglos: let the expat be German or Japanese.)

To Germany it's pretty simple:
HISTORY
1.ZDF - Die Deutschen: German historical docu series from the early middle ages aired on state television
2.Golo Mann - Deutsche Geschichte des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts: What the name says (Book).
POPULAR LITERATURE
3.Michael Ende - the Neverending Story
4.Walter Moers - the City of Dreaming Books
5.Karl May - Winnetou; Durch's Wilde Kurdistan
POETRY
0.fucking Rilke; random pretencious but humorous parody poetry from the 20th century
PHILOSOPHY
6.Nietzsche; maybe Schopenhauer; maybe Freud
UNPOPULAR LITERATURE
7.Hermann Hesse - Steppenwolf
8.Remark - Im Westen nichts Neues
VASTLY UNPOPULAR LITERATURE
9.Grass - die Blechtrommel
MUSIK
A.Have a favourite "Liedermacher"
B.Have an opinion about assorted "Deutschrock" bands
C.you gotta be able to humm Richard Strauss and Schumann and Schubert
FILMS
D.informed love-hate relationship to all the 1960s-1980s great German directors (Fassbinder, Schlöndorff, Werner Herzog etc.)
E.love 1920s-50s comedies ironically; sames for the Schnodderdeutsch mistranslations of foreign B-class Cinema
F.Tarantino copypasta cinema from the 1990s and naughts (by Till Schweiger, Thomas Jahn, Fatih Akin)

As an Anglophone I wouldn't be half as interested in German philosophy if Nietzsche, Freud, and Schopenhauer were the best the Germans have to offer.
>No mention of Kant, Fichte, Hegel, or any other idealists
>No Heidegger
>No Habermas
>No Witty (Austrian but the TLP was written in German)
Disgusting

No, this isn't "the best". It's the "sine qua non". If you want a 50 year old former humanities student to give you his special discount blow jobs (wiping with old issues of "Konkret") you could, for instance, read your Habermas. These days it is considered dead weight because the enemy drüben is no more; no need for his awkward attempts at an enlightened reconciliation. Kant, Fichte and Hegel will earn you blank stares. It's the stuff that our bureaucrats are made of. The Heidegger students just do it so that they can humor rich Americans and Francophone Arabs and Africans who bring cash to the Documenta. As for Austrians - well, Austria is for Austrians, not Germany.

Nietzsche, Freud, and Schopenhauer are hardly the sine qua non of anything but moral relativism. Your arguments don't diminish the significance or quality of the German idealists at all.

w-what do you think about Heinrich Böll?

Your reading comprehension they don't seem to have increased either.

Didn't include him only because he dropped a lot of moral weight when the historian Aly Götz had publicised his letters from the frontline which did not look anything like moral anguish. Grass is these days not something you would like in public either but he is sort of universal whereas Böll is mainly popular with catholics.

Yeah! That's what I'm talking about.

Wait. No. Now it dawned on me: Wittgenstein! No. Marx, von Humboldt & Max Weber - Yes / maybe. Wittgenstein, Dilthey & Frege - just no. It's a nerdy special interest thing. Same for Luhmann & co.

I understood that you didn't think they were essential German thinkers. I don't understand why you think Freud, Nietzsche, and Schopenhauer are *the* essential German thinkers. Kant alone is more important and more essential than any of them.

No, you didn't.

To Russia:
>history
important:
The History of Russian Statehood by Nikolay Karamzin is a classical enlightenment era narrative comparable to what was written by Hume and Voltaire. It was made into a CG animated TV series narrated by a popular rock star.

flavoured Russia historians in a chronological order:
Kostomarov - biographer; as a cossack historian he was re-appropriated by the Bandera fascists.
Sergey Solovyov - slavophile.
Vasiliy Klyuchevskiy - into geopolitics.
Mikhail Pokrovskiy - marxist.
Georgiy Vernadsky - eurasianist.
Boris Akunin (Chkhartishvili) - whig history, pulp fiction.

So, is there any interest? If not I go.
