Didn't care too much for it tbh. It was boring to me until like halfway through, then it got incredibly gimmicky when they actually started exploring the house. Not my cup of tea, but I'll probably read it again sometime in the future, if not only to force myself to like it so that I might have a topic of discussion with my peers in the English program

Why do we get this thread every day? It's a good book, spamming these inane threads provokes reactionaries like >>6833152 and then these threads devolve into shitposting threads, and then the association of X with shitposting makes it all that more difficult to have any serious discussion about it on this board. If you're trying to have a serious discussion, say something new and interesting about it instead of making the same half assed thread every day.

Right, those with differing opinions on this objectively amazing novel must be trolling. That's the only reasonable conclusion. Danielewski best author 21st century.

>Danielewski, from all appearances, is writing here with a straight face. But let’s be honest: this is the kind of purple prose one expects to find in a dimestore romance novel, or a second-rate horror story. When the postmodern footnotes are stripped away, and when we look beyond the helter-skelter page layouts, House of Leaves is a shockingly pedestrian piece of writing.

I'm about 350 pages into it. Rather enjoying it so far.

The "jingjing" chapters with all the Singapore slang and untranslatable classic Chinese are kind of annoying with the amount of stuff to look up,but they're getting interesting.

Can't even be bothered to present your own opinion eh? Did you even read the book to form your own? The best part is your little paragraph cherry picks a single paragraph, takes it out of context, then completely misinterprets it. Man for a moment there I thought there might be an intellectual discussion in this thread! (Kek)

be interpreted any other way? This isn't out of context. This doesn't even fucking require context. You have no idea what that means. I have my own opinions but apparently those get me deemed a troll so I pointed to an article that deconstructs Danielewski for what he is: a gimmicky hack.

Why is the book good? Oh wait, you have no reasons. Right.

Lol I gave you the benefit of the doubt when I called you a troll but at this point I think you're just on the wrong board buddy. No point wasting my time teaching somebody reading comprehension on a literature forum. I will suggest that you read a couple of books, just start easy with magic treehouse or Harry Potter or something then work your way up and maybe one day you'll be talking books with the big boys! In the meantime, don't expect to stimulate discussion by throwing other peoples' opinions around for the sake of contrarianism. Cheers!

>>6834944
Reading the letters from his mother was one of my favorite parts, it was fun looking for her secret messages, and her writing flourishes at some points, which is all the more impressive considering danielewski's self-imposed constraints. I'm probably going to re-read it in the near future, I feel like I missed so much. The parallels with the Minotaur story were beautiful in my opinion as well, overall the book felt like an emotional black hole.

I think with this particular strain of shitposting he's pointing out that it seems to just dismiss experimental literature as gimmicky for the sake of preserving traditional literary conventions. Maybe not the best word but it works. He could also just be using "reactionary" in the sense of this shitposting being a reaction to the popularity of something, which once again works.

A broader definition of reactionary would simply be pertaining to reaction, it isn't necessarily tied to conservative ideology by definition, more by connotation. In this case the reaction is to either the popularity of House of Leaves or to other people enjoying House of Leaves.

Well in that case, you're still an idiot and jumping to false conclusions. Not liking gimicky dime store schlock like House of Memes isn't dismissing all modernist, postmodernist, and otherwise experimental literature in one gesture you dimwit.

But then again such black and white thinking is exactly the type of intellectual prowess if expect from someone who so dogmatically fights to defend "literature" of this caliber. Both of you should consider eliminating your map for keeps.

A really enjoyable read for me OP. Got surprisingly heavy at some points as well, and I definitely wasn't expecting to get so many feels out of it. I enjoyed watching Truant's character develop and progress, and at some points his writing was a trip to read. It got pretty funny at points too, idk why but the long s part had me dying. I enjoyed the letters from Johnny's mother quite a bit as well. Tha Navidson Record was an interesting story, and I can see why people would label it gimmicky but I feel that the unorthodox text arrangements tied into the content fine enough. The pseudo analysis of the Minotaur myth might have been my absolute favorite part.

It was pretty boring. People made it sound like it was gonna be about a haunted house. The house parts are only a small part of the book.

Besides the house was just a metaphor for the wife's vagina. I don't understand why everyone calls it a horror story. The only slight horror aspect was the tattoo parlor guy slowly losing his mind.
