Didn't care too much for it tbh. It was boring to me until like halfway through, then it got incredibly gimmicky when they actually started exploring the house. Not my cup of tea, but I'll probably read it again sometime in the future, if not only to force myself to like it so that I might have a topic of discussion with my peers in the English program

Why do we get this thread every day? The "jingjing" chapters with all the Singapore slang and untranslatable classic Chinese are kind of annoying with the amount of stuff to look up,but they're getting interesting.

I will suggest that you read a couple of books, just start easy with magic treehouse or Harry Potter or something then work your way up and maybe one day you'll be talking books with the big boys! Reading the letters from his mother was one of my favorite parts, it was fun looking for her secret messages, and her writing flourishes at some points, which is all the more impressive considering danielewski's self-imposed constraints. I'm probably going to re-read it in the near future, I feel like I missed so much. The parallels with the Minotaur story were beautiful in my opinion as well, overall the book felt like an emotional black hole.

I think with this particular strain of shitposting he's pointing out that it seems to just dismiss experimental literature as gimmicky for the sake of preserving traditional literary conventions. A broader definition of reactionary would simply be pertaining to reaction, it isn't necessarily tied to conservative ideology by definition, more by connotation. In this case the reaction is to either the popularity of House of Leaves or to other people enjoying House of Leaves.

A really enjoyable read for me OP. Got surprisingly heavy at some points as well, and I definitely wasn't expecting to get so many feels out of it. I enjoyed watching Truant's character develop and progress, and at some points his writing was a trip to read. It got pretty funny at points too, idk why but the long s part had me dying. I enjoyed the letters from Johnny's mother quite a bit as well. Tha Navidson Record was an interesting story, and I can see why people would label it gimmicky but I feel that the unorthodox text arrangements tied into the content fine enough. The pseudo analysis of the Minotaur myth might have been my absolute favorite part.

It was pretty boring. People made it sound like it was gonna be about a haunted house. The house parts are only a small part of the book.

Besides the house was just a metaphor for the wife's vagina. I don't understand why everyone calls it a horror story. The only slight horror aspect was the tattoo parlor guy slowly losing his mind.
