They're short stories that were written out of order (like a lot of pulp fantasy, Howard's Conan, Moorcock's Elric, etc.), and they got placed in chronological order for those paperback releases, so you can just read those in order (the 'Swords' series https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fafhrd_and_the_Gray_Mouser#Publication_history))

I only just got around to finishing the first one today actually, but I really enjoyed it.

>Who writes the best war scenes

Eddison.

>“In such case stood they, nor were Teshmar's folk more than twenty paces from the walls, when, sudden as nightlightning, flares were kindled along the walls, dazzling the Goblins and the Demons and brightly lighting them for those that manned the walls, who fell a-shooting at them with spears and arrows and a-slinging of stones. In the same moment opened a postern gate, whence sallied forth the Lord Corinius with an hundred and fifty stout lads of Witchland, shouting, "He that would sup of the crab of Witchland must deal with the nippers ere he essay the shell"; and charging Gaslark's army in the flank he cut them clean in two. As one wood fared forth Corinius, smiting on either hand with a two-edged axe with heft lapped with bronze; and greatly though the folk of Gaslark outnumbered him, yet were they so taken at unawares and confounded by the sudden onslaught of Corinius that they might not abide him but everywhere gave ground before his onslaught. And many were wounded and some were slain; and with these Teshmar of Goblinland, the master of Gaslark's ship. For smiting at Corinius and missing of his aim he louted forward with the blow, and Corinius hewed at him with his axe and the blow came on Teshmar's neck and so hewed off his head. Now Gaslark with the best of his fighting men was come some way past the postern, but whenas they fell to fighting he turned back straightway to meet Corinius, calling loudly on his men to rally against the Witches and drive them back within the walls. So when Gaslark was gotten through the press to within reach of Corinius, he thrust at Corinius with a spear, wounding him in the arm. But Corinius smote the spear-shaft asunder with his axe, and leapt upon Gaslark, giving him a great wound on the shoulder. And Gaslark took to his sword, and many blows they bandied that made either stagger, till Corinius struck Gaslark on the helm a great down-stroke of his axe, as one driveth a pile with a wooden mallet. And because of the good helm he wore, given by Lord Juss in days gone by as a gift of love and friendship, was Gaslark saved and his head not cloven asunder; for on that helm Corinius's axe might not bite. Yet with that great stroke were Gaslark's senses driven forth of him for a season, so that he fell senseless to the earth. And with his fall came dismay upon them of Goblinland.

if you think that will produce anything but frothing at the mouth neckbeards, you're wrong

i'd be interested in some questions geared towards the history of the genres and their merit as literature but once again it would probably just attract angry faggots who don't want to admit certain canonical works would be classified as fantasy or whatever today

I know it is, and I've visited it twice you asshole. I just thought the fact that all of the places I mentioned, expect maybe Riften, are so obviously based on Venice that it was hardly worth mentioning. And since I'm not looking for books set in Venice but fantasy books with a sort of dark vibe to the setting, the places I mentioned serve as a better example than the actual city.

I mean holy fucking shit, only on /lit/ would I ever see some smug idiot actually feeling superior for knowing that Venice exists and thinking someone wouldn't. It's not the capital but due to its cultural importance not knowing about it would equal to not knowing what is Rome, or London, or Berlin. Or a 'murican not knowing that New York or L.A. exists.

it's not that he gets things wrong, it's just there are so many interesting places here that he could have put in the novels.
for example, there's a bridge called "Ponte delle tette" which translates to Boobs Bridge, basically in medieval venezia there were so many whores that they had to put them all in just one area because the city seemd like an open air orgy.
What i'm trying to say is that he probably never read about the city or its history, and it's a shame

>> No.6728786

>>6728733
Maybe that's because he isn't trying to make it like Venice, but a city that he himself created along the rest of his fantasy world. You know, he knows about Venice and has maybe never visited, or maybe has, but however he sees the city he's just picking some specific qualities of it and incorporating those qualities into a fantasy city which would fit into his story.

>>6728775
>there are so many interesting places here that he could have put in the novels
Just to reinforce my point, he can't or shouldn't just take real existing places and include those in his story. How stupid would it be to "create" a fantasy city and give it a new name, just to have it be just an exact copy of a real one.

What book are you up to? Gardens of the Moon and Deadhouse Gates were the only books I ever remember Apsalar and Crokus showing their dynamic.

GoTM was pretty measly. It interested me enough to keep going, though. Deadhouse Gates was a god tier tragedy - he really caught lightning, there. Memories of Ice was forgettable for me for some reason, House of Chains even more so. Midnight Tides was fun as fuck, but Bonehunters felt stale and slow. I'm halfway through Reaper's Gale and it's been the worst one so far, but it's just picked back up, and I'm looking forward to that signature Erikson style explosive finish that makes sitting through all the boredom of the build up worth it.

Not entirely sure if this is the proper thread for it, but I'm working on this story that involves fantasy elements in a post-atomic russia where their entire society has regressed back to the middle ages culturally and those that were affected by atomic radiation now have abilities in witchcraft. The plot mostly focuses on this traveling party who's searching for life in the wastleland called "The Red Legion" and their leader, Ta'al Vulstrum, is a cleric of the church of Leinism (practitioners of the ideals of soviet russia in a post-nuclear world)

1. Is that a Liturgy shirt?
2. The music is a bit loud and distracting, you could lower it a bit.
3. I feel like you should mention how many such fantasy novels that are described as 'racist' and 'sexist' could also be seen as period pieces that unintentionally date themselves and reveal societal cultures towards women, and thus have some cultural value through that.
4. An argument that I'm seeing now in SJW Circlewank is 'queer-coding', where villainous characters have gay traits. Think of all the campy, hedonistic, and decadent villains you've seen all the years.
5. I'm a tad disappointed you didn't mention the Earthsea series, which is pretty much the end-all be-all for people who cry that it's always Euro-based.
6. You should go a bit deeper on the Hypermasculinist fantasy thing, maybe on stuff like Conan (Where the main character is actually flawed), or maybe work that does match the stereotype that's commonly made fun of in fantasy circles, such as the Eye of Argon or the Gor series.

Overall, what you're doing works pretty well. 8/10.

She's currently reading one of the Drizzt books but she commented on how it's taking her longer and longer to get through each book (because they're boring and it hasn't picked back up since early on) so she's also reading some 1800s lit book (I don't know the title) at the same time. I also don't know what else she reads but Rothfuss is her favorite author :((((((((((((((((((

Well considering it's a supposedly an inspiration to the genre I can certainly see where people are getting this from.

They live in the slums of earth after most of the population has gone to mars, with high technology present such as the emotion machines, hover cars and the skinjobs. We have our artificial intelligence and our megacorporations, and our hero works a detective job.

Proto-genre objects are usually fairly lightly related, but in this case I would say it's quite a strong connection. As for your own expectations of a criminal underworld or a rebel group, I do believe the featured replicants are in fact a rebel group.

This was a very, very good book, holy shit.

-Most of the POV character started a bit dull, but I found all of them entertaining eventually
-Very quick and witty humor, but never feels like a Joss Whedon movie
-Best action sequences I've read since Conan

Only major problem I had was sometimes the writing was awkward. Overall I can't wait to read the next two!

Hey Cosmere fag, I like to think of you as Brandon's assistant, Peter. It would be nice for you to get this over to him.

I got an Idea for a novel that anyone here can use but my top choice for Authors would be Brandon Sanderson, Brent Weeks or Jim Butcher.

>the Idea
Guy walks into some store in the most racist place in the USA.
He is black(it will really fuck with people's mind), somebody gives him some racist slur or some shit, and he shoots them.

People in store also has guns, they gun him down, he gets up and kills them all, even the children.
Police arrive, they gun him down, he gets back up kills them all.

Later he approaches the on scene TV Crew and makes an announcement on a Live Broadcast, telling everyone that anyone one insulting or attempting harm on his person will be executed.

The reporter says something along the lines of "What gives you the right to kill people, who he thinks insulted him?"

He shows a perfect 3d holographic image, that has strange characters/images. He then goes to explain that he has the "right" to do as he because because he is now the ruler of this solar system.

He says the image shown is the Deed of the Solar system and he just bought it off the being we called God, then goes to list other deities that are found throughout other faiths and through the ages, explaining they are one and the same being trying different ways of rule.

He says unlike our former creator, he likes to take a personal interest in his work.

After other forms of law enforcement and military fail at killing him, a tremor goes through the world as they try to reassess their life and their place in it.

Story follows the new god, has lost of heavy mysticism, magic/energy that defies the laws of physics and advance technology that we can't even comprehend, even when we are sat down and it's explained in depth.

What you guys think? Was thinking of it while I was taking a shower this morning.

At first I thought this was a joke, because all of that 'gunning down' and 'deed' stuff sounded awful, but by the end there are some points worth exploring.

The 'all gods being one being' has been done before, but it could be worth exploring in the context of now having a new god for the first time.

The new god having a personal interest could be expanded into something worthwhile, with particular focus on the social affects.

The lead up would certainly need to be changed though, unless you're trying to make a young adult book that is screaming 'make me into a movie'.

>> No.6742957

>>6742744
I just explained it that way, because I was trying to get across as much of my thoughts as possible(I'm a former NEET, now wage slave, and I enjoy reading books... can't write them).

My idea was:
What if God was real and he sold Earth?
What if our new God didn't like the marionette show and came down here?
What if he fell into an altercation with someone and killed them because they bothered him?
What if after killing people that bothered him(town/city folk, law enforcement, military, etc) he semi-mini nukes the US continent?
What would the world do to cope with this revelations?

What I also wanted was a true GOD story.
No Mary Sue, secret ass pull BS, that some scientist analyzes a tape and sees where he draws his power from and separates him from it. Thus saving the day and mankind being true Gods could conquer all.
NO.

I'm talking full omnipotent, immortal all powerful, man from dust, GOD, who just tolerates us because we amuse him, unless we directly encroach on his personal space and annoyed him.

I read American Gods and the other books where the all is one or one source thing, it just hit me in the shower... and instead of doing my usual "imma write it down later" as I did with a bunch of other ideas...., I wrote it as soon as I came out the bathroom and posted it here later in the day so someone could get use of it.

Hope I could read it in a few years.
Would be nice for you to say thanks anon in the acknowledgements, would tickle that cold beating lump of desensitized flesh called muh heart.

The best magic system comes from the Nasuverse, because Nasu actually understands mysticism and doesn't 'scientify' it like other fantasy writers. Although he likes to explicate on semantically obscure stuff a lot, it really captures the feel of what its like to harness dense transcendent power. The highest order mages in the Nasuverse really feel like beings whose conception of normal reality has been so warped that they on the borderline between the transcendent and the immanent.

That's what I find the problem with a magic system is. Placing it in an empirical framework kind of kills the idea of Magic as touching what a philosophically idealist reality (in the Borges Tlon sense) would be like.

For anyone unfamiliar with it, it's a pretty interesting read for anyone who grew up with Narnia and Harry Potter and really wished that they would find out they were a wizard or destined to be king of a magical fantasy land or whatever. It's a really bittersweet and sometimes outright vicious deconstruction of those dreams - magic doesn't solve your personal problems, being a wizard doesn't mean you are the hero and the chosen one, if you are an unhappy person who is eternallly disappointed with life, you will probably still be disappointed with Narnia. It's not without its flaws, but it's a pretty interesting read if you grew up on that kind of fiction.

Overall it was probably a series I wouldve hated if I read them one by one with a years wait inbetween but reading them all at once was enjoyable

Did you see they're doing a TV show for it? I'll probably end up checking that out to see if its any good

Weird boner is a good way to describe it. Thanks for the recs, a few of those like American Gods Ive been meaning to read but some of the others I would've never heard of probably

I have read Broken Empire and First Law but don't remember too much there in the first, maybe a scene with Jorg and Chella at the end of emperor. Might've got a boner from Logan and the demon chick but damn it's been a long time, can't remember

Because most people who read fantasy are literal children without the faintest understanding of the roots of the genre beyond "tolkien invented fantasy xD", or really without even a real interest in fantasy beyond slamming a bunch of mediocre best-sellers to waste time. without Eddison there would be no Tolkien, and for that matter probably no Conan, but apathy of modern audiences has condemned him to the same obscurity as Dunsany, Hodgson, or Lindsay.

it's okay. it definitely feels a bit like some guy read ASOIAF and was like "this is cool, but not grim or dark enough" and then put pen to paper, but it's considerably better written than plenty of contemporary stuff. My other big point of reference for it is Dune, oddly enough, it really captures the same weird "oriental" feel. The world in general is well built and has some genuine mystique/atmosphere to it. There's interesting villains. Hero is a bit of a dong but he's not like, Kvothe levels of annoying where you just want him to fuckoff out of the story already. My biggest peeve about it is the diacritical marks out the ass. You can hardly turn a page without reading about Ñíg'gërfâgghött, son of Kokhänbäłłz. It's much better than your average doorstopper epic but damn, dude needs to tone that down.

Fucking hell

I didn't read the spoilered part since the first post seemed to be spoilery enough already. Before either though I got impatient and skipped ahead a bit and saw the part where they finally do it. I was content, then I saw that post say it goes bad/the result isnt good and now I have a bigger worry knot in my stomach than I did before

I wish I knew why the fuck I cared so much. What the hell does it matter to me if Croaker and Lady live happily ever after? They're not even real for christ sake. The book isn't even really about that type of romantic crap, its just one small part of it and Im reading like its the most important thing

I used to read manga in my teen years and I would laugh and laugh at the shippers and character pairings people obsessed over since it all seemed like the dumbest shit in the world. Flash forward and I'm in my mid 20s and I'm sitting here worried like a teenage girl wondering what's gonna happen between them

Now as I go back to reading I'm sitting here waiting for something bad to happen the whole time. I dont know why I had to turn into such a romantic faggot that cares about these things but its awful. Sorry for the blogpost

Yeah I love it, one of my favourite series. Not for everyone, though. Captures the "epic" feel more better than any other modern fantasy does. Bakker's normal "good guy" characters are pretty boring, but his psychopaths and freaks (which make up about half the POVs) are brilliant. Worldbuilding owes a lot to Tolkien on surface level but there's a much more complex history behind it, and the metaphysical aspects are deeper than any other fantasy novel I've come across. The major con would be the endless fucking philosophy. Shame the next book has been delayed for years due to a shit publisher.
