The terrible writing which makes up this absolute pile of horseshit has made me cringe to the point that I had to stop reading for a couple of seconds to make it through a couple of paragraphs. I have burst out laughing at how terrible it is. Now I'm over it. How the fuck can something so shit become so popular? I hate this piece of shit. Fuck this book. Fuck this planet. Fuck the people who like this book. And fuck the people who don't like it, too. Fuck baby squirrels. Fuck starving and sick children. Fuck everything that has happened in the history of this universe. David Foster Wallace, you fucking dickhead. You worthless hunk of shit. You think you're a good writer because your stupid fucking book is so highly rated on /lit/? Die. You fucking faggot. Fucking jump into a volcano.

Dood he an hero a long time ago, like 2009?
And people here mostly like it ironically and for the jokes, aside from the couple fags who aren't in on that.

Bullshit. The contrarian backlash against DFW only began in earnest in 2012 or '13. During /lit/'s Golden Age he was near universally liked. If you hate DFW, chances are you are part of the reason this board sucks now.

actually /lit/'s golden age was the first week after its creation in late January 2010, and ever since it has been a completely worthless pile of shit

It was full of memeposting and /b/tards during its earliest days. /lit/ was best for about a year after the tripfags were banned or chased off, which was I think mid-2012 until mid-2013.

The only reason this book is hated on is bc lit is full of pseud contrarians who like to go against anything that is really popular. They dont realize something can be both popular and good. These are also the type of people who criticize Zeppelin while applauding obscure garage rock bands from the 90's

Zeppelin are awesome and any "obscure garage rock bands from the 90s" were just better produced rehashes of the garage rock bands from the 60s and DFW still blows.

If it is necessary for identification in the sentence, it is that. If it's extraneous information, it is which and should be used in a nonrestrictive clause.

Examples:

The cow that is brown is prettier than the rest

The cow, which is brown, is alone in the field.

You need to know the cow is brown to differentiate it from the other cows in the first sentence, making the information necessary, and so it's "that." It isn't necessary in the second sentence. Similarly, you would use "that" because you're referring exclusively to the writing in this book and therefore it is necessary information.
